my wife and i will be visiting boquete in august. we are currently in the process of buying a place there for future retirement. we would like to spend 2-5 weeks in boquete to "get the feel of" living in boquete. we think that housesitting would be a good way to do it. if anyone is interested, please contact us.
also, we are interested in hearing from ex-pats in boquete regarding their experiences there.

6-5-06: Hola, benjoy...Just returned from Panama while doing my retirement research & checking it out for possible future retirement
2009. Visited Boquete & spoke w/expat from Tennessee for 1.5
hrs. Re: Boquete, his experience was rather disappointing of late.
Area becoming quite pricey & flooded w/expats, thus raising cost of
living. Says been forced(by landlords)to move few times when others offer more rent for his 3br-2bath rental casa @ $150/month.
Naturally, landlords take more rent offers &, Tennessee's out in 30
days casa hunting..again & again. Also, some of his expat pals rent/
own casas, are absent for several weeks/months, & return to find
burglars have nearly/completely wiped him out of all but walls! Got
to hire trustworthy person to "casasit" during entire absence. Key-
word is TRUSTWORTHY! As result of multi-breakins, he's gonna
check out town of Santa Fe. There are many sites for Panama info
investment/retirement. Possible to get leads from following:
www.retirementwave.com(Bob Adams) & www.your panama nug-
gets.com(Sydney Tremayne), D.C./Maryland & Nova Scotia re=
spectively. Also: www.why panama.com www.move to panama.
com are just a few. On NET, just type in Panama & see what comes up. Many links to follow. I've been doing my retirement re-
search for Latin American countries past 16 months. Extremely
important to do research 1st before going to country to check it
out. Then, rent for full year & travel there widely to experience
weather & other requirements relevant to your retirement needs.
1996-2001, I taught TEFL(teach English as foreign language)in
Costa Rica/Japan/Slovakia. Lived in Italy & visited India Nov 2001.
Experience is undoubtedly the very best teacher! Try not to be
too hasty in your selections before you have made concerted ef-
fort to thoroughly investigate interests. Would highly recommend
talking w/neighbors in your areas of interest. Real estate agents in
business to SELL..most any way they can, w/primarily THEIR best
$ interests in 1st place. When signing ANY real estate contract,
a MUST to enlist TRUSTWORTHY, fluently bilingual lawyer to nego-
tiate business/paperwork for you, making VERY SURE lawyer act-
ually COMPLETES all essential business, files entitlement & deeds &
supplies you w/LEGIBLE copies of ALL paperwork, & that such have
required signatures/dates. Foregoing can't be stressed enough!!
Please email me anytime you like for more info or, if you have such
for me. Enjoy your searches.

Hasta luego,

thanks for the advice. we will be back in panama in sept for about 3 weeks. my husband has been following various locations around the world for a number of years now and finally convinced me that we need to research it up close and personal. we visited panama for 16 days in april. i was a little surprized---i liked panama more than i anticipated. fortunately, we have been able to travel fairly extensively over the past 27years, so we have a realistic view of what "developing" nations are like. panama had a much better infrastructure than i imagined.
you are right about everyone and their brother being out to sell real estate and/or legal services. we'll be careful!
what have you concluded about your quest for the ideal retirement home?

there is some affordable land outside of boquete, still in chiriqui, but one has to look to find it. we also saw some very modest homes outside boquete. PC is a nice big city, but it is a big city and doesn't have the quiet pace and moderate climate you find in boquete. volcan is an option also. since we are not interested in living in a large city, i'd look for a place outside of boquete, which is what we did, if i were you.
