someone asked me a while back about any info on a shipping containter home and I found a link to a site a man down the road from me is building. http://panamashippingcontainerhouse.com/

again to me this looks like a lot of work and no money saved.

One idea which might make this practical would be to create low cost standardized modules for bathrooms and kitchens. Just push them in, screw them down and hook them up.
Such modular units would have standardized methods for connecting to water lines and gas bottles (propane). Optional room divider units could be used if needed/desired.
The key would be finding a way to really drive the costs down by Latin American standards, not just U.S.

El Sitio at Venao Beach in the Azuero used the containers to create a motel of sorts and it turned out pretty good. Google them for pics or contact them for information.

That sounds like a good idea, but again it will come down to what type of materials you would have to use to make it strong and light weight, any wood in this and the bugs would eat it and the water would rot it out.

when using containters as your base I just don't see how you would save money that way. if you get say 4 units at 3k to 4k each that buys a lot of blocks. your still going to have to put a roof over it all, and do a ton of cutting and welding.
a friend of mine builds homes for the poor and they build them for around 8k per unit. they pour one slab for 8 units and leave a walk space between each one. They are small and each unit is the same. One design for all.

your idea is good but I can't see you doing it for under 8k.

I'm afraid I agree with Mark 100%. I have a friend who built home from 2 containers, cost him $2700 each, then had one cut in half to make a U shape.
Then he had to put it up on piers and then cement under the complete unit for bugs and rodents etc. Then put up a $7000 roof over the whole thing. Then had to start on the interior, wiring, plumbing, tiling, cutting in doors etc. etc. etc......... And now he has a house that looks like 2 containers on sticks.
Good thing he's a welder by trade, he did most of the work himself.
Curios about the wood thou, Mark. I have seem some structures made with the pressure treated wood , with termite problems.
But I've also seen some built with some of the local lumber (Nispero I think) and they seem to be fine.
Any comments??

nispero wood is a good wood, but it all boils down to price, and any type of wood down here is high dollar and no where near the same grade you would get from the u.s. I guess you can build a few things with it, but your going to have to keep it up, I have 14 widows made of wood in front of my home alone, and we keep staining the crap out of them, most are out of the weather and out of the sun, but they still need proctection from bugs.

I have a 8 piece hand made out of huge wood chairs for my front porch and after 5 years the termites have turned them into fire wood.

to billmiller54 again your plan sounds good, but if you can build a two bedroom home for under 8k your way then have at it, heck sign me up and I'll work it with you. WORK, there I go cussing again.

I think if you could get the plans done, then make them out of some kind of plastic molds then bolt them all together, it would cut down a lot of labor and time. the only problem I see with this, is like here in el valle, the very rich really will not allow a bunch of small homes to be built here for the poor, now saying that you might get it done some other place, but again your going to run into the very rich, who are the ones who have the contacts to get the government bank to bank roll all their housing for the poor. as a outsider your dead in the water before you start.. now thinking that way you might say well I could sale them on time to the poor, which is true, which means you better have a ton of cash you can tie up for years, and when they don't want to pay their note to you, well have fun getting the law to make em move out.
laws down here will sink your Buttttt so fast you wouldn't understand it.. like lets say you have a home you built and sold to one of them, they make the first payment and then tell you to go pound sand.. you call the law,, well here is where you will learn a good lesson.. you see down here, if there is anyone that is living in that home who is under two years old, or if a woman living there is with child say three months along, there is no way in god's green earth that the law will make them move, if they paid you or not your stuck with them, and trust me when the police show up to find out there will be 4 kids under one and three women that are 3 months along.

Ideas are a wonderful thing, and I have made this statement more times on here then I can recall, but what works in the u.s. won't work here.

to me a containter home is well a metal box, it might be your dream but what happens when you have to sale it? again by the time you add it all up you have not saved a dime, and your stuck living in a shipping containter.
now as far as a earthquake, you will be better off then my concrete built home that's for sure.

now before everyone starts pounding me with p.ms about the 8k two bedroom,, this is built by a friend of mine, who buys supplies by the ton and gets a huge discount, they build 1k homes on one site and the bank pays them up front for them, he is in no way for hire to build one for you or would he. plus what he builds I wouldn't think any of you would be happy with anyway, they are very small nothings.

Hi. One thing I really wish I had thought of was garden furniture! The price of table, chairs etc for use outdoors is crazy here in Panama. Even in the UK we could have got them at a fraction of the cost and I could have included them in my shipping container.....

That's because people here in panama use this furniture a lot more and in a area that is special built for family and friends to spend a lot of time in and around. It must be nice and make a statement. they and we also use it year round here. not like other places that use in 4 months maybe.

so they demand for this type of furniture is a lot higher then other countries supply and demand..

I wish I had thought it through though 802mark! I didn't realise there would be such a huge difference in price and also thought that as so many people would be using it all year round, there would be no short supply and costs would be kept down. So, if I was putting together 'stuff' to bring to Panama, I would deffinately gather together some great outdoor furniture and ship it with the rest of my 'stuff'.
