Recent Flood in Cerro Punta

Notice in Panama for the next 48 hours of heavy rains.......................

The flood in Cerro Punta started upstream in the the La Amistad International Park, where heavy rains caused landslides that clogged the river behind an accidental dam of trees, boulders and mud. As the waters rose behind this unstable barrier, nobody in the park — which is managed by the National Environmental Authority (ANAM) — nor anyone in Panama’s SINAPROC disaster relief agency seemed to be aware of what was happening. The dam burst, sending a wave of water, rocks, mud and logs down the already swollen river, overflowing its banks and washing away things, animals and people in its path. There was effectively no warning. ANAM wasn’t spared either — their park ranger station was damaged in the flood. Thanks to the good people of Boquete who came to the rescue with medicines and supplies for the homeless. Many homes destroyed and lives were lost. Many of the displaced people are farmers in one way or another, whose fields are nearby, often uphill from their devastated homes. It turns out that the direct agricultural damage from the floods was less than expected. The landslides were in the park, not in the vegetable fields above the homes that were destroyed.
