About taxi fares

Use this to see what the taxi rate is for where you are going. One thing to keep in mind is that while fuel prices have gone way up the fares have not. So an extra 25% should be added for fairness. Taxi drivers can spot a foreigner and many try to over charge. Know what your fare should be before you go. When ever possible use a Metro bus or the Metro line. Buses are 26 cents, Metro is 35 cents. The same card is used for both. The card costs $2.00, then you add money to the card. If any of you want to know more about the Metro bus or Metro line, just ask. The bus can be confusing due to all the names of the routes.

That would be 25 cents and 35 cents.

Here is a rate chart. This will help you find the rate for a taxi from one place to another. I have a print out of this that I carry with me. I do not hesitate to share a copy with any taxi driver who tells me the wrong fare.

Not all taxi drivers know what they are doing. Some just rent the taxi for the day. If you have a problem with a driver be sure he sees you taking down the number of the taxi and the number of the plates. Don't expect anything to be done about it but it usually sends them running. Most of the time you will have no problems but because I use taxis a lot I have had a few. The worst being an attempted strong arm robbery of my purse. The least being fresh men suggesting I needed a boyfriend. There have been maybe a dozen times I demanded they stop and let me out... immediately.

One last thing..... There have been times I hear expats say not to get in a taxi when another person is in the taxi. Use common sense, If you are going to the same place as the little old woman in the back, share the taxi. Yesterday an expat, in the pouring rain, wanted to go to the same place I was going but refused the ride. These guys are just trying to make a living in a place where that is not so easy these days.

I just check number to calculate a fare I know. It showed double what I pay. I think the official ATTT site is a better choice to find a fare.

I just spent a bit more time looking at numbeo.com and what they did is take the cost of getting in a taxi and used that as the cost per km. That is not how fares are done here. So while it may be near correct on trips within a zone, it is way off for anything longer. The ATTT site is Panama's official rates. My fare to work would be $3.00, not $7.00. Although I do add a dollar because of high gas prices and the nasty traffic where I live in the high rise jungle. I add $2.00 on particularly bad days.

About the taxi fare from Tocumen airport.... That is a set fare at $25.00 because they only allow certain taxi drivers to pick up there. Often they will say $28.00 because of the tolls. I give $25.00. To the airport you would use the rate chart. To the airport, and I live quite close to where you live, I pay $15.00. It would be less if I didn't take so much luggage when I go.

Immigration. I have done that trip. $3.50 with my extra in the price. If my friend goes with me they pay 40 cents per zone so 80 cents more..

This is all great advice. We'll arrive on the 2nd of Oct. but in the evening. Should I expect to pay $25 total for my wife and I to travel to the center of town not far from the centro comercial plaza concordia? Should I tip the driver?

Yes, $25. is the fee from the airport for a taxi. An exception would be one of the vans which is $30.00. The only time I have tipped on top of that is when we got stuck in traffic for a few hours.
