Thank you to Gerlinde for this. This can happen anywhere in Panama, so it is always good to be on your guard. Make your place and person, less attractive to banditos.

On Monday, Sept. 22nd. three expats were robbed in their home on Capirita street close to the soccer field. They were tied up and one of their cars were stolen which later on was found in Pacora. This happen during lunch hours among heavy rain. However, their garden gate was open and so was the house door. The thieves (2) were on foot and armed.
This incident is very disturbing, especially that it is very close to our area where we live. Please keep your gates and doors locked at all times.

I have been warned several times that ladrones prefer heavy rains as it masks the noise. And remember, you are being watched as all times.

Yes, they call it El Valle de Anton amongst other things. It is near Coronado and Penonome, on the other side of the highway from the ocean, up in the hill a bit, actually in a dead volcanic crater.......Very attractive spot actually......They have a great Butterfly farm there, Butterfly Haven........

EV is about 22 k north of the Pan Am hwy, about a 45 minute drive if you drive safely & want to enjoy the views, good 2 lane windy road at the end, drive carefully an American daughter was killed on the road several years ago. Also stop at Paraiso restaurant about 3 k north of the Pan Am hwy, restaurant is owned by Canadians & the site for many ExPat gatherings.

What you should remember is there is still some Panama resentment against American from the days of the Panama Canal Zone (flag riots of '64, etc.), especially in P.C. area & many ExPat who are not American might be mistaken to be American by Panamaños.

The Panama resentment against Americans will be heightened soon as the new movie came out this month called "Invasion." It's the Panamanian version of what went on here in Panama when the Americans invaded to take our Manuel Antonio Noriega in 1989. Here is a bit of that story.

"Abner Benaim’s film INVASION, starts with the premise that true images captured on film, are limited, because they excludes all reality outside of that shot.

This is why in his film Invasion, that will be premiered at Cinepolis VIP rooms and regular rooms at Cinemark September 25th, they will not show pictures or videos of the events of December 20, 1989.

Will the memories of witnesses, plus recreated key scenes, show the public what happened when the American Army invaded the isthmus of Panama in order to overthrow and capture General Manuel Antonio Noriega?

"When you see a photo or video file, you miss what was happening at that time in the same place," says Benaim, who is responsible for the direction and screenplay of Invasion.

The previously existing material of this historical event, was just "meant to be objective truth" but is not necessarily so.

Hence, put your bets on the accounts of his sources, who serve in this national tragedy storytelling, with an approach that "evokes powerful images in the imagination of the audience."

Do your best to get the most out of the flow that comes from the imagination and memories of those consulted who were there at the time. Benaim is aware that resources can leave "room for doubt and allows for exploration in the search for truth ' without trying reach it."

Benaim says "The word is connected to the imagination. The story will always be an integral part of life. That need is the raw material with which nourishes the memory.

"One can imagine the world with people, places and activities that seem impossible to draw in the mind, but in dreams and imagination, we did," said Benaim , while adding that "we hear stories like entire dream scenes. The beauty is that each weapon is its own movie. "

The Invasion film, originally titled Where were you? , rescues the collective memory of Panama about what happened during that December 1989 time frame, when Manuel Antonio Noriega, finished the last chapter of a military dictatorship that brought him to power in October of 1968.

This film by the director Abner Benaim , received the International Film Festival of Panama award for the best film in Central America and the Caribbean, as well as the award for the best documentary.

In a scene 'Invasión', a group of young Germans do not know anything about the invasion of Panama. How do you explain that?

Who was asked to reduce the importance of this event, to try and make it become inconsequential and make it disappear from history? They almost succeeded.

This film effort started from the military operation itself and the way the press reported it. It was practically locked up in military bases and information was limited.

This was before the era of the internet, and it was much easier to control the information. In the case of the invasion, both parties, the United States and Panama, were silent for various reasons and buried the truths, and so of course, did the rest of the world.

The issue becomes more serious when in another scenario, you ask young Panamanians about the invasion, and they do not know much, if anything.
I've talked to young teachers and school friends, and it's amazing how little, that the young people know about the invasion. It is the responsibility of both schools and parents, to teach the children their history.

The invasion, which was 25 years ago in a historical context, is like saying that yesterday no longer exists, or is cared about or remembered, is not analyzed, and is not integrated with our identity. That says a lot about how to manage our Panamanian history, and speaks of a collective amnesia, a desire to live in an idealized place where everything is good and nothing bad happens.

Why not ban the movie because of potential consequences to our city and people. This is just a recap of history 50 years ago.Let it stay in the history books!!

There are many people in the Panamanian Government and certain circles, who would agree with you. Other people just want to hear the other side of the story. For many young people, this will be the first time that they have heard about it. I won't be wearing any American paraphernalia when I attend the movie. I hope they have subtitles. Maybe I will wear a Canadian jacket with lots of maple leafs on it.

Geez, I understand nothing from that description. It sounds like a bad translation from Spanish.

I realize that this can happen anywhere but this is disturbing, since this is the top of our list of spots to live. We are basically coming down with very little in terms of value! I guess that is a good thing! Does anyone happen to know what triggers the thefts? Do they see a TV? A ring? A car? Is there a pattern? Again, not bringing much with us, but I am curious.

IMO I think that EV is one of the safest places in Panama and violent crime is not common in Panama period, especially if you keep your nose clean. But crime is always scariest when it is close to home. Thefts of various sort are not that unusual depending on the location but fortunately they rarely are violent. I do think that creating at least the perception that you don't have much is always a smart thing. And remember, if you are confronted by a robber, don't resist.
