We are taking an exploratory trip to Panama early next year. Interested in seeing LaValle, Coronado, Pedasi and Las Tablas. Should we set up a "base", and travel to the areas from the base or travel to each area individually. Also, timing...1st quarter of next year. Suggestions Please!

Sounds like you will need 2 bases. El Valle and Coronado are about 45 minutes apart. But Las Tablas is a 3 hour drive. Las Tablas and Pedasi are about an hour apart. Make sure to monitor the water conditions in the Azuero because they have had contaminated water twice in 2014 in Pedasi and Las Tablas

I would set up a base and then travel from there. Mostly because then you have a place to keep things so you're not lugging everything around all the time, you also have a place to go when you just need to chill and take a break from your travelling. If I were you, and I knew what I know now, I would see if I could meet some expats online from the areas I'm interested in and ask them to show me around, or at least meet for coffee and talk. It's a great way to get a feel for the community and almost all the expats I'e met have been amazingly friendly and open. If you are in Coronado let me know and I would be happy to show you around and join you for a meal at our favorite restaurant (where you can have a full meal with meat/rice and beans/sadad) for $3.25. It's amazing! And the owner is wonderful. So yes, set up a base and then start making connections now, it's worth it in the end.

A single base might work depending on how much area you want to cover. When we did our fact finding trip in March we set up hotels in 4 separate area's. We flew in to PC and stayed the night then rented a car the next day and drove to Boquete it was a 5 hour trip. We stayed at a real nice hotel called Palo Alto. It was $90/night, we stayed for 4 nights and checked as much of the near by area as we could. We then drove east back towards PC with 2 - 4 day stays in Padasi, Santiago, and Coronado. This provided us with a decent big picture look at what Panama had to offer.
