MOVING? USE YOUR RV! INVESTIGATING PANAMA..USE RV... Adventuretours has done Panama for over 30 years and has publications, roadlogs, and where to camp.
RETIRE AT HOME? or INVESTIGATE YOUR LATIN AMERICAN OPTIONS while driving the Americas! You have probably heard; Retire in Mexico, Retire in Costa Rica, or I can live on my pension, like a King in Brazil !....... well there are some places you can retire to that you may love to be in and also the climates are favorable, maybe because of a medical condition. Also there are countries that have many medical benefits and low-cost or free care.
Foreign Retirement is a discussion in itself, pros and cons, countries have encouraged the foreign retiree by offering many incentives such as free importation of household goods, auto, and a duty-free status as a retired person. Panama has a discount to all retirees at all restaurants, 30% on movies, and many admissions are also included.
A way to "investigate" the different Latin Possibilities in your RV is to go drive on the Pan American Highway to the tip of South America! This way you can visit, not only the big cities, but the small towns, and villages, farms, and communities in between. Actually living in your RV, you can see the way you have to buy groceries, buy propane, water, pay taxes (if any), and get the feel of the neighborhoods. The local garage, hardware store, restaurant, and know how much a loaf of bread costs. This you usually can not do by flying in and staying in hotels.
If you drive the Pan Am Highway from the USA, you will pass through about 13 different countries, various cultures (Spanish, German, Italian, Portuguese, English, and Welch), The foods and wines are also a great experience. See for yourself, go to the end of the worlds' longest highway. You can do by yourself with pre-planning and you can also go with a motorhome, or trek group that does this type of tours or expeditions over the inter-american roadway.
I have traveled it and found about a half dozen places very nice...it's the decision of "which" I am still thinking....you have to choose between culture, foods, medical, climates, sports, fishing, birds, nature, and the friendliness of the various residents is so overwhelming ...that why it is so difficult of a decision.

If you believe all the rumors, you wouldn't even think of going to Panama in the first place!
I have traveled the Pan American Highway to Panama over 70 times in the past 30 years. I use common sense and NEVER, repeat NEVER, had a problem.
The border crossings sometimes can be a $$ challenge, but if you are not in a super hurry and know what you have to pay - not much of a problem. Also be sure your paperwork is in order.
The legal border fees for the countries of Mexico, Guate, El Sal, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica total about $250, which includes insurance, and permits. If you have a pet, there are about $100 more in fees.
Out of the 70+ trips overland to Panama, 90% of them have been in a RV...( i took a few trips in private car too.).
If you are going for the first time and speak no spanish you might want to get a travel log or go with a group from the trekoftheamericas.

I'I hope everyone's aware it's impossible to drive the Pan American Highway past the Darien in Panama.
You really should remove the claim "A way to "investigate" the different Latin Possibilities in your RV is to go drive on the Pan American Highway to the tip of South America!" because it's impossible to do so.

You can take your RV onto a boat and have it shipped to Colombia, to continue your trip, and I might add, at a huge expense...........

I have driven the Pan American Highway to Panama at least 70+ times - mostly in a RV ** I also have driven all the way to Ushuaia, Argentina (the southern most city in the world) 14 times! Anyone that can read a map knows you do not go via the Darien! For the last 15+ years I have used a commerical freighter from Colon to Cartagena Columbia. There was a time we ferried via the "Crucero Expess" and NOW you can take the new ferry to Columbia. It's like in Alaska, part of the trip is by ferry. The Pan AM highway is the longest highway in the world stretching from Alaska to Argentina!

The cost has now been drastically reduced with the operation of the new ferry, its about a $1000 for vehicle and your passage as well..no more flying

f you have your Panama paperwork completed, and are prepared for entry and customs duties (if not exempted). Is this a type of RV that is towing or a private auto? It is easier if you have a RV, and cargo is tipical of a traveler...tourist.

fuel is no problem, a/c is best, but if you can climatize to the weather its even better.

DISCOVER AND TRAVEL LATIN AMERICA...SEE PANAMA AND THE COUNTRIES INBETWEEN! Some people think that travel is not for everybody, but the essence of travel is experiential expansion. Instead of repeating the same life experience every year for ten, twenty, or fifty years, travel can give me fifty life-changing encounters in one year.
The result is that instead of reading only one page out of the world book, we’re given the opportunity of perusing a greater proportion of it, and exercising our human-ness, rather than suffering from soul atrophy.
Travel can and will transform your life, anyone’s life, if you let it. RVing on the Pan American Highway, lets the locals get to know us a human beings, not just the passing tourists, as we get to live a bit with them in their home towns.

just curious my wife is from panama we are considering buying a smaller rv. I thought it might be best to ship it to panama by boat i have many connections with freight forwarders. I had thought about driving and think it could be interesting, but was concerned it could be dangerous mainly around the borders of many of the countries
