Driving in Panama

(people in Panama help me with what you know):

Do not drive & talk on your cell phone.

No U-turns

One Panama told me when he was riding with me on a rainy day when I turned on my head lights for safety "you can't do that, only officials can their head lights on during the day (don't ask me about new car with head lights that are on when the car is started)

Caution, many street sign including one way (Una Via) are missing & often hard to determine which streets are one?

Driving on 4 lane road (2 lanes each way), stay right except to pass.

Anybody have any helpful hints?

Do not talk on cell phone.

No U-turns unless posted.

We drive with out lights on all the time as we have a car that does that.

Streets signs are non-existent. Be very cautious of your surroundings. In David a lot of one-ways.

Always drive in right lane. Use left to pass only. Was stopped when we first got here for driving in left lane. Let us go after $20.

Was that $20.00 paid to the Ministry of Transport or the officer?

This might appear really crazy but its probably one of the best tips. A law passed a few years ago requiring that every car carries in the glove compartment "Reglamento de Transito"--I truly believe someone who owned a print shop was hooked up with the passing of this law, nonetheless it is the law and you have to carry it with you and show it to the transit authorities if they stop you. This is also a good place to put the 5 B as someone suggested in previous postings. Please make sure the vehicle you rent has this book inside the glove compartment.

Thanks for the info about the rule book, I haven't seen one yet, but I'm sure the rental cars have an English version in the "glove box" ja ja 2 BTW I have a scan of the accident form in my home desk top, as I remember it was green? PL

The following article appears in the April La Playa Community News and is a great summary of some of the idiosyncracies of driving here: http://playacommunity.com/en/panama-articles/useful-information/6081-driving-in-panama.html

Sorry for posting this so long after this thread dropped off the radar, but I thought it might be good for visitors planning on driving here.
