We have decided 2 things: 1) We're moving to Panama; and 2) We're taking our dogs.
While we are in the process of kennel training them for flight, we are curious about just simply driving to Panama in an RV. Thinking not a big flashy monster, just a reasonably sized Class C which we would park at our long term rental (when identified) and drive back to Canada every six months.
Has anyone here any input on such a venture ?

www.drivetheamericas.com has good info and links. There is lots of RV traffic. Storing your vehicle is another matter to take up locally when you arrive.

Hi, this is wwwxsmemories.com. I have the only rv park in the country. I do accept dogs but they would have to be on a run or lease, Have dobermans cats birds, here. If you fly how will you get them anywhere? The odds of renting a car that permits dogs is slim, then only a few airlines will allow them in cargo, and you would have to have a vet present, and it also depends where you are coming from. Personally I would do the RV, the borders are a hassle but there is always a helper that will assist you in the crossing. Just make sure that your dogs have all the necessary paperwork. the airlines are very concerned about the animals, and they will only allow them during certain hours days and times. Any more info contact me personally @ xsmemories@hotmail.com Sheila

I would love to do this. I already live in Panama but often thought how cool it would be to RV from the States. Does anyone have suggestions what would be the best most reliable smaller RV to buy for a single woman to make trips with a group like this?

www.adventuretrek.com 30+ years experience RVing to Panama.=====starts in texas. The best is a class C motorhome, no towing, and if possible a diesel.

Your choice of a RV, much depends on your budget and your future plans for use of the RV.
******** FIRST , if you are just buying for a one-trip look for a economic one in good condition, you can get a great "older" class C motorhome for under $8000, check the tires and oil, and head off! ********SECOND, if you are planning on traveling, especially on the Trekoftheamericas Maybe going on to South America, choose a DIESEL, used and always under 30' in length...this you can get into for $10,000 to $25000 and remember you can always sell it after you return. THIRD ******** BE sure to check this and more info on the following website: www.adventuretrek.com

What to do with your RV once you have landed in Panama? Rent it out to expats who come for a week or two. I know a fellow who has about 5 of them on his property. It's like a campout every night with a variety of different folks. They are generally much nicer than many of the Panamanian homes here. Start yourself an RV Park here if you want to have a job when you arrive in Panama. Bring in some local bands and have Woodstock every night.

You may live in it until you get a more permanent place, if you wish. Also you can drive it back or sell to another foreigner in Panama. You must renew your temporary importation papers after 60 or 90 days.

The #1 on the list is the "Bornfree with a 7.3 Ford diesel" class C motorhome. These are a bit scarce but well worth the investment.

We have a group of 6 RVs arriving in Panama and the next group should be leaving in about 4 to 6 weeks from Texas to Nicaragua and Panama.***********This has been a good year to travel with NO hurricanes enroute and the highways are pretty good. ******** We will not be doing any trips during the Christmas Holidays, some are using our RoadLog and driving themselves, mostly those that have done this before. ***** Remember when you come south, you must wait 90 days before returning north for the vehicle permits of El Salvador, or you just get a 24 hr pass to go through. You can also option to miss and go through Honduras.

I sold rvs for 14 years also owned them and lived in them.Winnebego/Itasca is the best built. You will want one that has a walk around bed and good bathroom.I like class A the best for driving and view.A large class B,van style can be nice if it has a slide out.

I agree about the Winnebago. Spent 4 years getting to know the countryside in one. Took it through some impossible terrains. It's a winner.......chicken dinner.

Normando. It is a quirk of this software. Clicking on post does post what you have written. However the Message text is still sitting in front of you and does not disappear as you would expect. I have mentioned this before but there do not appear to be any moderators or supervisors to whom we can report this quirk.
Bottom line: Write your message. Click on post reply and it will appear.
Do not click on Post Reply a second time.

Well, first thing they have to do is pay the duty when they bring it into panama, If this is not done, then it can not be sold, or tagged.
