Hello, we are a family with young children moving to the Coronado area this September. We are originally from the UK but are relocating from The Bahamas. We have very little knowledge of the area and would like to know where is the best area to look for a long term rental? Are there any families and activities in the area?

Nueva Gorgona, Coronado, Punta Barco, San Carlos, El Palmar and Rio Mar.
It's about 15 minutes from Nueva Gorgona to Rio Mar. Coronado is in the middle.
El Palmar and Rio Mar have a more intimate feel. Coronado is larger neighborhood with most of the amenities on the main highway. Punta Barco has many large properties with stables etc.
All of these areas have a selection of stand alone homes, homes in gated communities and high-rise condos.

i would highly recommend condo rentals that have a security guard. I would not recommend moving to a house. there are plenty of families, younger kinds now since international school is opened. playacomunity.com is the expats site with activities. Coronado might be your best bet or 20 minutes away Bijao, plenty of outdoor activities and things to do for youngsters. I personally would not pick any other area.

Coronado is only 40 minutes from El Valle with good hiking, waterfalls, zoo, thermal mud baths, and of course Butterfly Haven. Jon www.butterflyhavenpanama.com

Thanks for the input. Is living in a single family home in a gated complex recommended, or is a condo just the best option?

I am in my 10th year in Panama and my children were 3 and 5 years old when we moved. We never lived in gated communities or condos and never had issues with security. The only robberies we have had were our own caretakers and we caught them on Camera drinking our Bacardi.
You just need common sense when picking the right neighbourhood.
What you should pay more attention to is what type of education you want for your children. We decided that the schooling in PC is still much better and did not want to home school. I put a lot of emphasis on the best education possible because of my own experience and want my children to have that same option later on.

for me...a condo would be a best option. houses get broken into, or robbed by caretakers. or must have a caretaker in there so you don't get robbed. they get scoped, know your pattern then rob you. I would feel much safer in a condo. if you are a 'house person' then get a house. there are people that no matter what, you can't make them move to a condo. I would pick a condo. I've been around the block and heard too much stuff. that is my decision and I have done it and stayed out of trouble.

After living in a home and then condo in Panama I would prefer the condo. The climate here creates that much more work and finding good staff and contractors here can be a full-time job in itself. Not to mention the peace of mind of locking the condo door when you want to travel and explore the rest of the country.
Create a list of what is most important to you. If green or open space is one of the reasons that you prefer a home, consider complexes like Rio Mar which have a lot of amenities, gardens, beachfront etc, all of which you do not have to worry about maintaining.
