Animal Shelter Problems in Chiriqui

Panamanian officials investigated an animal shelter built with no permits or inspections of the septic tank. They decided that this shelter was too close to residential homes and too close to the River Pedro, which feeds into the River Cochea. This river provides both Dolega and David with drinking water. They filed resolution 0042015, stopping construction on the shelter.
We all love animals and want to help them. This particular shelter will not help animals, because it is in an area where the animal waste can infect both the other dogs in the shelter and humans as well. This shelter is located at the end of a residential area. You have to go down four unmarked streets and down a huge hill that is very steep to get to this proposed shelter. It would be difficult for people wanting to drop off or adopt animals to find and access it. Where will the volunteers park their cars? How will our little residential road handle all that traffic? The shelter is right in the middle of a residential area where the noise would be unbearable for the residents. It is on the edge of the Olimpo Wildlife Preserve. The bacteria that comes from the dog waste could also infect the wild animals in the preserve.
The people who built the shelter don't want to listen to the Panamanian officials and build the shelter in a proper commerical area, where; by the way; we are all willing to donate our time and money to make sure the shelter will succeed. We want the shelter in a commercial area that is easy to find and bring dogs to, easy for the public to adopt dogs from, and where the animal waste can be properly handled. They are holding a news conference today at 11AM (Wednesday July 1) at the Dolega Municipal building, right on the road from Boquete to David. They are going to try and sway the public opinion in their favor and over rule the Panamanian Officials. Please help us to stop them. They are not looking out for the benefit of animals or of people. They are only looking out to get what they personally want. This shelter is not safe for the dogs or the humans around it. All we need is a little of your time. Please help us take a stand against this total disregard for Panamanian Laws.
