Hi we are hoping to visit Panama to see if we like it enough to stay. We ask for some advice on where is a good place to start. We are looking for a place with enough to do. We prefer warm not hot. We mountain bike, hike and sail. We would like good internet if possible. We would like a strong expat community to help us adjust. Thank you for your replies.

Boquete and the Coronado area (Nueva Gorgona to Rio Mar) probably have the largest expat communities and enough things to do. Boquete is up in the highlands, about 7 hours from Panama City and Coronado is on the Pacific Coast about 90 minutes from the city and has several smaller highland communities nearby such as Altos del Maria and then El Valle de Anton at about a 50 minute drive away which is slightly cooler.

I have a Hobie 18 that I put on the beach most Sundays at the Decameron resort near Farallon. I am always looking for persons that like to sail.
Look me up when you come to Panama.

Given the fact that you want the combination of cooler/not hot climate, a good expat presence and things to do, your choices are Volcan, Boquete, or El Valle. That's it! I can't comment on internet at the first 2 places but El Valle is ok-just make sure your area has Cable Onda, not Cable and Wireless.

Let me comment on internet in Boquete. We have 15 meg very high speed internet here from Cable Onda for $55 a month.........We have 4 apartments sharing it and it is still fast as blazes. Download a movie in 5 minutes, a TV show in 2 minutes...........

Pacific side is used a lot for sailing. An hour or less from Boquete, and you are heading out to the open seas. But a lot of folks like the Caribbean side as well. You can get to either ocean from Boquete. The Caribbean is a longer trip.

You will have more small islands to visit, and cleaner water on the Caribbean side. A lot of folks use Shelter Bay for cruising the archipelago of San Blas and Bocas del Toro Islands. Closer to Panama City, there is a sailing club operating out of Contadora, I think.
I don't see many sail boats of any kind used around me on the Pacific side. But I have a blast nonetheless.

el valle sounds like the perfect fit, you can hike and mountain bike until your worn out. It is far colder but not cold here. there is a large number of expats that live here. we have cable onda with fast service no problems there. plus a town with lots of places to eat out, two banks, gas stations, zoo and a whole host of other things.

How close to the ocean is El Valle?

About 30 km. There are numerous beachs east and west from the intersection of the road to El Valle and the Pamamerican hwy. Some nicer than others.

From downtown El Valle, or from the ButterfIy Farm, I have weaved my way out the El Valle winding exit roads, and made it to the ocean in about an hour. Generally 45 minutes out to the highway on a good day and another 15 minutes to find an ocean beach to park at....... 5 minutes difference here and there.
