Five thousand surveillance cameras will be installed throughout Panama next year, according to plans by the Ministry of Public Security. The director of Technology and Communications, Ministry of Public Security (Minseg), Ricardo Diaz, estimated that by mid-2016 cameras could be working, after the work is put out to tender. Diaz said in a public statement that the agency currently is studying an agreement with the Electricity Transmission Company SA (ETESA) to use a system using fiber optics to connect the chambers between the provinces and the center of command and control system, which will be located at the headquarters of the National Police in the capital. Diaz said that there may be about 10 suppliers that could participate in the tender in Panama. Recently the Minister of Public Security, Rodolfo Aguilera, reported that these cameras can capture license plates of vehicles in circulation, facial recognition (up to 60 features that recognize a face), and also detect shots and types of weapons. The minister said that two thousand places across the country will be chosen by the National Police to locate these cameras.
