We begin a 6 month rental in Pedasi in February and want to buy an inexpensive Toyota or Nissan vehicle. Anyone have ideas where to start looking ?

Here in Panama there is no NADA or KBB automotive vehicle pricing. Depending on what you're looking for and where you look for it, you may be surprised to find late 90's cars needing wheel barrings, shocks, windows, a fender or two and probably a complete engine rebuild costing north of $6k! Pricing is dependent on how bad one needs a vehicle.
Be very careful when purchasing an other than new car. Example .. You answer a newspaper or CL ad with a picture of a late model Hilux for $9k. You show up and the person sees you're from North America ... He/she is then quick to say the ad was a typo and all of the sudden the truck is now $14k !
I purchased my best vehicles from rental car sales lots such as Hertz. Sure rental cars get beat up, but they're still better maintained than 70% of those from private sales.

tharin4prez; you are correct. However if you buy from a rental company, you need to be sure the vehicle has a Paz y Salvo. I bought a used Maxima from Nationsl car rental a few years back and when I tried to renew the plate, I was told I owed nearly $500.00 Ticket fines. None were mine but of folks who had rented this car and Nstionsl told me it was off their hands. I never got refunded.

We were hoping to get into something around the $ 5,000 mark. Is that realistic ?

Keep in mind that in Panama, tickets go with the car, so you need to check before you finalize any deal. Also, as previously mentioned, have the car thoroughly checked by a trusted mechanic. Beware of scams (from both locals and gringos) and hopefully you speak Spanish so you can get car insurance and handle the titling on your own. Otherwise, try calling Craig McLeod at Beaches Auto in Coronado - he will do everything for you for a very reasonable fee.

I do have two suggestions:
Before buying the car, have the mechanical and electrical systems inspected by a mechanic. If the seller won't agree to this, then don't buy the car.
Check the handbook maintenance logs. Are they signed by a mechanic at the required vehicle maintenance intervals? Or can the seller produce signed receipts showing the maintenance was performed? If not, do not buy the vehicle.
