Time is getting close for our first trip to check out Panama for retirement in 4-5 yrs. Looking to meet Expats between April 2-4 in PC and April 5-9 in Boquete and David. We will be staying in David but would like to make one or two day trips to Boquete. We are late forties and our 14yr old son will be with us. We are looking to explore and and get a brief feeling for the areas. We will be coming down several more times over the next few years. We are looking to make some expat friends that we can keep in touch with and reconnect with on our future trips down.

You have some exciting plans for your retirement. Speaking from Panama City, a large, bustling metropolis, making friends in just 2 days is unrealistic, no matter how outgoing you are. The ex-pats here are either working or leading busy lives. With all respect meeting a newcomer to feed them information is asking a lot. It would be like wanting to make friends in New York City in 2 days.
What I suggest is that you take a tour of various neighbourhoods popular with North Americans, either self-directed or with a guide. Once you get a feel for the place, then you can ask some specific questions that might get a response other than just a wish to make friends. For starters you could check out El Cangrejo, San Francisco, Paitilla and Costa del Este (a suburb) to get an overview.
Enjoy your trip!

If you can, try to get to Boquete on a Tuesday morning for our Tuesday Market - many expats attend and it is a great place to meet people. Your other option in Boquete is to stop at Sugar and Spice in town for breakfast any day of the week except Wednesday when they are closed- the local hangout for expats. We live here, and have been stopped on the street, while grocery shopping at Romero's, chatted up by people at the next table over dinner, etc. Most expats here are friendly, will chat with you for at least a few minutes, and you can find one or more people to continue a conversation with!
