Considering moving to Panama

We are going to take a year off and Panama is one of the places we are looking at. We are in our 40's and have a 5 year old. We like to kitesurf (and my husband and son like to surf) and he would have to be in a decent school somewhere. What areas would you recommend to live? We would want to rent and then maybe buy for investment and rent out when we go back abroad for work (when oil & gas jobs are more available). We are Americans and have lived abroad for 12 years. Also considering living in Brazil again but Panama is so much closer. Any input is welcomed- need to make a decision soon!

I would suggest first coming to Panama, Find an area which would be conducive to your life style. And public schools are of poor value here. I would suggest a private school,, or home schooling your child,
This is a good forum, and loads of info has been written on this subject,

Msturge: Further to Joannamu's comment, the way to find the answers to your questions here on the forum would be by using the search function in the upper right hand corner of this page. As Joannamu pointed out you will find a lot of info here and the search function is how you will find it.

Thanks, I started out with a search and read it all- was hoping someone could reply about our particular lifestyle as to a good place to live. We want to have access (not too far of a drive) to where the surfing and kitesurfing is, but also want nightlife/culture/interesting things to do, plus a decent school. Thanks guys!

Pretty tuff to put allthose things together in one package in Panama. but if you really put a priority on being close to a windy beach, then I would suggest somewhere between Gorgona and Playa blanca, and maybe even on the Azuero close to Las Tablas.........lots and lots of wind there..........thesurf not so consistent inside the gulf cuz unless its from the hard south, its blocked.........but the best place to windsurf or kitesurf.........and up and down that gold coast area, there are quite a few nice bars and restaurantes...........And your only an hour and a half more or less away from cosmopolitan Panama City............

Hi I'm Sheila. I would recommend the Pedasi area. There is a thriving expat community and all the sports you mentioned. Being your son is so young he'll pick up Spanish faster then he was potty trained. I have friends that have places to rent. The local school system is bad; there is a private school down there but it is costly. You can only stay in country for 6 months and to buy and leave is really something you will have to think about; and really who knows when the jobs you want will recover. I wish you luck if you decide to go down there I'll give some people to contact that I've known for 20 yrs. [email protected]
