We have been coming to panama for the past 5 years and always leave after our 6 months are up. I recently heard, the panama gov., changed their rules, so that now you can only stay 3 months, and then you need to get your passport stamped, that you left. I was not told any had changed with immigration when I entered the country in October? So what now? Does anyone know is this new law effective immediately??. Is there any grace period?

It depends on where you are coming from.
the general rule is that you can stay 90 days if you are driving, then you need to leave Panama for at least 72 hours before you can be stamped back in to the country. Plus you need to prove that you have $500 and a ticket out of Panama.
If you're not driving, then you can stay 180 days, then you need to leave the country at least 72 hours before you can come back. Same rules for $ and ticket out of the country.

There is a lot of misinformation on the internet regarding the recent changes. The bottom line is that for most there will be no change. Citizens of countries such as the U.S. UK and Canada, that do not have to apply for a visa, can still stay for 180 days. But as pointed out above can only drive on their home country license for 90 days.

we are from Canada, and fly in, plus have a return ticket. however I have been hearing lots of gringos from coronado area, are doing the CR run now because of changes the president recently made, regarding our stay, that apparently are effective immediately?? So just wondering what to do or will I be fined, at their discretion?
