Exploring becoming an Expat

My family and I are planning a trip panama for about 20 days or so to explore the possibility of becoming expats. We're not looking to exclusively stay in resorts and hotels. We would like to actually spend some of that time in a community among the citizens. I am looking for suggestions on how to maximize our time there.

Hello and welcome.
There are basically 3 environments to explore in Panama on a first visit: Panama City, Coronado (beaches) and Boquete (hills). Each has fierce supporters and equally fierce detractors. Suggest you get a good guidebook like Lonely Planet that will describe each area and give you guidance about non-resort type hotels. Some hotels (called suites) have self-catering, which would allow you to shop and prepare meals like a local. Another alternative is AirBnB, but it is high season until about May, so finding an apartment or house to rent might not be possible on short notice.
After reading, you decide on how to allocate your time in each area. A lot depends on your needs: will you be working remotely? You'll need good internet.. Will you be travelling to clients? You'll need to be close to Panama City for the airport. Do you have special healthcare needs? Panama City has the best and most accessible hospitals. Are your kids school age? There are adequate private schools in each of the areas mentioned. Public schools unfortunately are not an option.
Good luck!

If you are planning an exploratory trip I would suggest doing it sometime between May and August. December thru April is tourist season here with people flooding in from North America and Europe to escape the cold. Also hot and dry here for 4 months along with a flood of Panamanian holidays. May thru August is more temperate with 1 - 2 hour rain showers 4 or 5 days a week in the afternoon. My favorite time of year here.
