Multi city flights/layovers from Guatemala-Panama-Bolivia with COPA airlines

Hi everyone, i want to get from Guatemala city to Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia probably with COPA airlines (with 1 stopover in Panama city). I have found lots of combination deals with the total prices ranging from 300-400USD (one-way).

To get these lower prices, I had to use the multi city feature on COPA's website. Otherwise, the price is just above 600USD for the same route (without the lengthy layovers). The discount seems to kick in if you at least spend 1 day/night in Panama. Is that how it works?

The cheapest/shortest combination I found:

Guatemala City (GUA) to Panama City (PTY)
April 1st, 2017
COPA 359
Dep: 4:15 pm
Arr: 7:37 pm
2h 22m
Boeing 737
Economy (E)
Meal

21 hour layover

Panama City (PTY) to Santa Cruz (VVI) —
April 2nd, 2017
COPA 127
Dep: 4:08 pm
Arr: 10:03 pm
4h 55m
Boeing 737
Economy (S)

$327US one way

For the same price there is another flight combination leaving Panama 7 days later, in case I want to spend a week in Panama. How many days do you think I should spend in Panama city? I can spend 21 hours in the airport or a week in Panama. The price will be the same according to their website. Since i am eager to get to my final destination in Bolivia, i am leaning toward spending the night in the airport or a 1 night or 7 night stay in Panama city.

Don't have any suggestions about flight itinerary, but have you calculated what it would cost to spend 7 days in Panama City? Count on at lease $100/day for hotel, meals and ground transport. This expense might not be worth it to you, especially as you're so keen to get to Bolivia. Unfortunately I've had to overnight at Tocumen airport when a flight was delayed. If you decide to do this, bring food and water because all the facilities shut down after a certain hour (can't remember when).
Good luck!

we got competition on cheap flights with different airlines, vivacolombia, avianca is running a special if you buy from February 8th to 14th or something like that. there are hostels and cheap hotels in the city $50 w/ breakfast included. anyhow, you can stop in panama for more days if you need or want to. I would, better than being stuck in the airport eating expensive airport food. Cheap taxis or $0.25 buses or $0.35 metro fare, no need for anything fancy.
