Toe in water

Hi. I'm planning on spending 3 months in Panama to get acquainted and find some real estate for my move there. I'm looking for something close to water, lots of nature, friendly neighbours, the kind of low stress life I've dreamed about, with access to medical care and not too far from a city. (I've lived in a big Canadian city all my life and i want to leave all that concrete behind).

From what I've read on line - Coronado seems like the likely place to start ... but I would so much appreciate some thoughts from folks on the ground.

Thanks so much,
Chris

Coronado is a great beach town but very hot and expensive. It depends on how close to the beach you want to be. In Panama you are never very far. We live in La Acequia de Potrerillos which is half way between David and Boquete at an elevation of 1500' with a view of the Pacific. The climate here is perfect and no need for A/C or heat. We are 35-40 minutes to Playa Barquete and 15 minutes to major hospital care and shopping in David which is the second largest city in Panama. It is very quite and peaceful here and yet close to everything. We are 15 minutes to Boquete which has one of the largest concentrations of expats, with many restaurants, music, entertainment, etc. From here it is about 2/12 - 3 hrs. to Bocas del Toro on the Caribbean side. It is certainly worth checking out.

@Cegwilson: Like stgibson mentioned, Coronado is (can be) more expensive that other areas. However, it is all relative. For me, I like Coronado because almost everything is right there (banks, 3 supermarkets, new well staffed/equipped clinic, malls, food places, expats, locals, beach, better security...). You will pay for that convenience, but FOR ME it is worth it.
Also, it is smack dab in the middle of the Arco Seco (Dry Arch), which means you get WAY less rain the other areas during the wet season.
Being 1 1/4 hours from PC, I can get there if need be (for immigration, meetings with business people, nightlife and the airport).
What you need to do, like what I did, is write down what is important to you (in order from MUST HAVES to I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE) and then come on down and explore. Set a realistic budget and then add 20%.
One's perfect destination could be another hell on earth.

Best of luck on your journey.

Thank you!! Do you think it's a safe place for a woman to live on her own? Boquete looks lovely too. When you say to make a reasonable budget and add 20 per cent - in your experience what might that be?

Thanks again for your help. I promise to pay it forward.
Christine

something I didn't point out is that where we live it is 20 minutes to the airport with several 45 min. flights to Panama City each day. David also has the only other immigration office in Panama where you can do your residency without multiple long trips to PC.

That is a bonus as the Immigration office in PC can be a nightmare.

Tell me about it. The Migracion office here is like going to a spa compared to PC.

The Coronado - Playa Blanco coast has high rise condos that would be safe but not cheap. I have a ExPat realtor sales lady in the area you can trust. She lives in Coronado.
