I know this is a very vague and relative question. We have lived in a Latin country for 5 years so we are not naive or ignorant about crime.
We will be moving to Panama with an in-home business (computer and business equipment) that needs to be secured. A higher elevation is much better for us. Our first choice is El Valle but we have heard that crime is increasing quite a bit there. We were also considering Chica, Cermeno or Buenos Aires / Altos area.
Any thoughts form the group? I appreciate your comments. Thank you.

P.S. Guess if you are looking at EL you're looking for interior living so that might be the beaches around Coronado, Pedasi or Boquete?

We don't want the beaches - salt corrosion, hot, humid, mostly crowded. We want elevated areas like the ones I listed. Boquete area is too far away from PC.

Have you checked into Cerro Azul? It's about 45 minutes from Panama city. Its a community that sits about 3000 feet above sea level so Temps are in the 70's in the daytime and quite a bit cooler at night Los Altos de Cera azul is a gated community also.

Try Altos del Maria above Coronado & next to El Valle. It's a gated & beautifully natural. For us it is perfect--cool & quiet & great. But, everyone has their own opinion.

Altos is isolated, no stores last time I visited or heard & 30-40 drive to good stores at Coronado, assess thru the ghetto town of Bojica off the PanAm Hwy. Near a name. Very hilly & some house are accessed via long stair steps. I wouldn't want to drive the road at night either FYI.

el valle is one of the safest places you will find. we have had three murders here, all by the hands of locals on locals, we have never had a report of any type of rape, nor have we had any report of a armed robbery of a biz. we have never had any report of a home break in where the home owner was home and hurt at that time. we have had a few break ins while the owners were sleeping, but again not harmed in anyway nor even woken. Home break ins in el valle and all over the country happen more before xmas and next weeks big party. they need money for the kids, food for the family, and money to go get drunk on. outside of those times we might get a few empty homes broken into by kids, empty homes meaning homes that the owners have not been too in a while.
some of these homes that are broken into are the work of your cleaning staff, who knows everything you own, when and where you will be. what camera's and outside lights you might have, in other words your whole set up. Now I base this statement on 11 years of living here in el valle. the crime rate for the whole country is going up, we are seeing more crimes with the use of guns and people willing to use them.. this is in part due to the fact of all the outside men the country allowed in to work on the canal. and that canal is now done and they don't want to go back to their country and they can't find work.

Ref Cerro Azul, it is a beautiful elevated area to live but limited shopping, most back in P.C. as stated about a 45 minute drive & access is thru a "red zone" area which a Panama friend who has a chalet in Cerro Azul tells me not to stop in that area. BTW last I heard this friend had his chalet for sale FYI. Last I knew there was a small shop on the road to C.A. but no other shops that I know of, I'll have to ask him?

I will have to say Ricobreeze is correct about El Valle....I am a single woman and have lived here 7 years by myself. I tried Altos del Maria and found it too isolated for me with nothing to do...the hills are steep so you have to be in good shape if you like walking. El Valle is safe as long as you are not stupid....leave the rolex at home.... El Valle to me is the best mountain community by far..we have everything here to get by own.... I do take pre-cautions just like I did in the states..just different...in the states I slept with a alarm on and a 38 on the nite stand...here it is a metal base ball bat, a machete and mace plus 3 dogs . I find people without dogs are more of a target...in 7 years I have lost 4 propane tanks on my property mostly from my two casitas that are on property...the last time they tried to get the tank in the back casita I let the dogs out...first time I ever saw a Panamanian turn lily white and fly up 8 feet in the air...now, when I walk my dogs the area worker's go to the other side of the road.....

Wow.I have lived in several states over my 70+ years and still do not own a weapon. If I had to keep a gun-loaded?- on my nightstand,I surely would move,as you did.,but to somewhere I could sleep peacefully without guns and dogs.Canada?? I see no need for a firearm personally, but everyone has their own ideas on that subject, for sure.:)
