I once arrived at 12am for a 2am flight. Security was not allowing people to lie down and sleep, nothing was open so I could not buy water (TSA took mine), the water fountains did not work, and the gate security just made a mess of my carry on and even dropped my laptop. Hopefully it has changed from 2 years ago but better to be prepared in case of.....

The Riande is awesome. It is usually full of expats transiting and we found them very willing to give advice to newcomers. A bit expensive but worth the information gained. L-

Agree that overnighting at Tocumen will not be comfortable, and there will be no resources available (food, water). You will have to exit the secure area to go through immigration and claim your baggage. They might not let you check in for the David flight and reenter the secure area, meaning you'll be stuck in the public area. Do it only if your budget does not allow a hotel stay.

The Riande Hotel Tocumen is your best beat, just off the airport property, shuttle bus to/from the airport. There is also the Airport Crowne Plaza that is about 2 years old. It's very nice and has shuttle service, They also accept small pets

Consider the Nation Hotel in David, like the Washington Hotel in Colon, they are historical landmarks.
