Anyone heard about this accident?

A Tourism Taxi driver was killed and two Canadians are injured. I just heard this during a social gathering yesterday and looked in the newspaper. It looks like the Canadians were carrying 40K. It is not mentioned if they declared it or not but family of the Taxi driver killed said that all the people in Aduanas at airport should be replaced. I guess they think it has something to do with people working there. This happened on the way to Colon in Corredor Norte. (I was told).

I have not seen anything about it, but this happens a lot. I am sure they declared the money first off, no one wants to risk losing 40k by not. 2nd what happens is when they write that amount down, someone at the airport alerts a local standing around to which party has the money. then they attack at a traffic stop. sounds like the driver saw what was coming and tried to out run them. a driver did the same thing last year while on the phone to the police. this time it sounds like the driver crashed. whoever at the airport who saw the forms needs to be pulled in and spoken with about what part they played in this crime. only a few people see it. these tourist had that money on their person. so start with the person or persons who looked at it.

@ Ricobreeze802. My friends also said that they were followed from the airport and that it is not the first time this happens.
The sad part is the driver died I hope the 2 Canadians know they were responsible. You don't bring that amount of money in cash. Very sad.

@ Iseldon

That was how it was described to me. I understand that the Government is trying very hard that incidents like this are not out there because they are trying to attract tourism.
Also, there are some people in this phorum that will "attack" me If I would have written a Taxi Driver was killed and two Canadians severely injured in the Topic Title. I love this country but you cannot hide what happens. Yes....I get it this is nothing like Chicago, Los Angeles, or New York. Not it is not. This is Panama and there are only 4 million persons in the entire country. Every single "incident" counts in a city/country as small as this one.
And by the way there was an "incident" in Costa del Este in one of the buildings close to Copa Airlines. It seems that someone believe there was a kidnapping but police came out saying it was something else. ( Telemundo interview with Alvaro Alvarado)

And.....I do not sit here all day long watching police crime news I work and do not have time. I do watch the morning news when I have time and the evening news and have friends who is the best way to keep in touch with what is going on in this country.

golric I understand what you are saying, I lived in Panama when the 1M baby was born, it is small in population, but the point is people need to be safe & aware of what is happening where ever they live, in this case Panama. Point is "accident" instead of another word like incident might make the difference if a person read your posting. I'm thinking it is important they do. Riding a taxi can be dangerous, I've read several report of people riding in taxis being robbed. I like to visit the old Rancho near Av de Martes & one night got into a taxi that had another passenger & they continued toward C.V. that made me nervous, the driver noticed & assured me it was OK & fortunately it was. Since that time I have rented cars & not taken taxis but if I need chauffeur service I use Jesus who I had recommend in the blog before. If anyone knows the Rancho & were to go there the employees will call you a taxi & probably the safest way to get back to a hotel or residence. Traffic & driving in Panama is another subject for another time. STAY SAFE ya' all. PL

well of course they were followed, they were tipped off to them carrying cash by someone at the airport. and no it wasn't the fault of the 2 Canadians, lets blame the real people at fault, maybe start by the people who were chasing them trying to rob them? and then the person at the airport tipping off any of us coming here that obey the law and write down how much money we are coming in with?

I could stop this all in a heartbeat. just allow me to bring in my team, I would fly into panama filling out the form for say 65k in cash, get into a van and drive off. when ever they hit us the van stops and a 5 man team armed to the teeth step out and take em out, leaving one so that one can spill the beans on all at the airport that are helping with this set up. one time is all it would take and it would be over.

Well another shoot out this time was a Brit. Two persons in motorcycle shooting his car in Punta Pacifica.

The police said the Brit was laundering money and he is wanted in Spain. Well....we don't care about Spain, what will happen if you are a passerby or live in that area? The Brit is was injured but alive. This was in the news last night when they were talking about the electricity problem and no lights in several places in the city.

YES I was watching the TV.

@ Ricobreeze Mark

I was under the impression that you could only bring up to $10,00o in cash. I guess I am wrong....

Also, I was told that the scanners can see you are carrying big money even if you do not declare it in the form.

You can bring under $10k in without declaring it. Anything above must be declared.

@ Panama 2017.
You are correct. Thank you.

I assume they declared it as the newspaper mentioned the amount of $$. How sad it has to be for the family of the taxi driver just doing his job to bring money to his family.
