Hi, My wife and I were talking about a our upcoming move and the excitement around it etc. We are fortunate enough to retire from our jobs before we turn 40, leaving us relatively young to enjoy the sun. Our daughter will be joining us of course, can't leave a 10 y/o behind. So the question my wife raised and I didn't have answer nor have I seen the answer: what happens to her when she is done school?
Obviously we will be applying for the pensioners visa permanent residency. My daughter will fall into step with us, but when she is voting age what type of residence is she? Is there a big reset where she will need to run around and to gain her own residency? Or is she just grandfathered under us?
Thanks in advance

Your daughter would qualify for permanent residency as your dependent. Her residency would be, as the name implies, permanent. However, she would remain a citizen of the country of birth and would not automatically become a citizen of Panama. Note that valid lifetime guarantee of pension is required for either you or your wife to qualify for Pensionado visa.

So even once she has reached the age of majority, she will still be a perm res despite not living under our roof? My son is no longer a dependent since accepting the queens schilling.
As you stated, we will have to prove our pensions, easy. But once my daughter is no longer a dependent, what does she have to prove or will she continue to have perm res.
As for Panamanian citizenship, I would have to give up my current one which is a no go.

Divorce or death of the principal applicant will invalidate the dependent's residency status.
This happened to a lady in Volcan when her husband had a fatal heart attack and she couldn't qualify on her own.

It is my understanding that once the dependent child is of age, he or she would no longer qualify to be a resident. I know few people with the Pensionado Indefinitiva that have minor children. Those I know either have not had the children reach aldulthood, the child has a disability that qualifies them for a visa on their own or as a permanent dependent, or, as in most cases, the child has left Panama for college in their country or countries of citizenship. I am going to check around to see if I can find out what the rules are. I am now very curious about what happens in these cases.

Back in the day, to cover our children (it was $100 per dependent) to get our children their Pensionado cards, but if the main person with the lifetime pension died, it was not definitive if the dependents were covered and remained under that umbrella if the pension stopped. I have never been asked for proof that my lifetime pension is still in effect nor have any dependents and we all have either Citizenship or E-Cedulas now so that changes the story again. I doubt that my son with his E-Cedula would be asked for proof of his lifetime pension when his 10 year ,E-Cedula is up for renewal. The best thing to do is get your citizenship when you can. At least get your E-Cedula.

You don't have to do that. Actually the US needs to agree, it is not unilateral on your part. You can agree with the Panamanian requirement only and keep your US citizenship as far as I know. The Panamanians won't recognize it, but the US will. BTW I am not an atty, I just read alot.

panamajames, does the E cedula for Pensionado say "indefinitivo"? I am permanente and the E cedula has that on it.

My family and I are coming down in April. We are doing our initial look around before we commit. Coronado area first to look at the two schools there.

The Pensionado says Indefinito, which means until they decide otherwise, while the E-Cedula says Permanente, which gives the status of "Permanent Resident". I like the sound of Permanente vs Indefinito.
