Ascunsion to Iguazu Falls

My family will be in Paraguay for 10-12 days in late June. What is a good way to get from Ascunsion to Iguazu Falls (Argentina side) without going through Brazil? We don't want to get Visas for Brazil, too.

Thanks for any advice.

We just took the same approach back in October 2008. You need to take a boat from PY to Puerto Iguazu, Arg., which is going to depend on your transportation arrangements. We went through a tour company, so our driver dropped us off on the PY side, took a small lancha (guide accompanied us) and we were picked up by Taxi's on the Arg. side. If you are renting a car, I believe you can do this on your own as they have ferry's that shuttle cars across. The boat launch from Paraguay is right at the tri border (see google maps) - zoom in and you can see the actual dock. I'm not much help on specifics and logistics, for that, I'd suggest contacting the travel agency at Hotel Portal Del Sol, they were a great help (including arranging the taxis in Arg, so we didn't have to worry about cash) and were affordable. If you would like to discuss more, feel free to email me at erikr77 at gmail dot com

Hello!
The best way of course is the way you want to avoid! There is practically no check at the customs, Brazil being part of the Mercosur. And...you could admire both sides of the falls which are really a "must" in South America. But, of course, with a lack of luck you could get caught! So, there IS a way, very nearby Ciudad del Este to enter Argentina using a ferry that crosses the river several times a day. I know a German who does regularly, for little money, that tour. If you wish I could post his phone number, or once you are here, and if still interested I could try to put you in contact, speaking myself German currently. But I would need to know your name and address in Asuncion.

All this is correct and that little hotel is very nice and their employees very friendly and helpful. It can only be added that to go there you´ll have to drive about 400m (via Ruta 2) if you rent a car (not advisable in this case). There are very confortable coaches driving near non-stop from Asuncion to Ciudad del Este (there you take a taxi to the port embarcation) . Or, you take a mini-bus that will drive you where you want for little money, from and back to your hotel (with overnight in Argentina because the Argentina side cannot be done in one day). I can find out what that would cost (it is NOT charged per person). All the best and welcome to PY.

I made inquiries about your problem. A private bus, with aircondition, would cost 2.500.000 guaranies (+/- 550 USD) from your hotel to the falls in Argentina and return. That would include petrol, the tolls beween Asuncion and Ciudad del ESte, but not the ferry boat to Argentina. This price is a return price if you return same day (not probable visiting the Argentina side of the falls). If there is an overnight you will have to pay the driver´s hotel room. This price includes the complete family (not per person!). The driver speaks Spanish and German. His name is Carlos Plankl and his phone number (00)595 982133268 from abroad. From Paraguay: 0982133268
If you need help to contact or to book, please write to me privately. I will then let you have my phone number. All the best!

I've lived in Ciudad del Este. If you are going within 30 miles of the border, you do not need a Brazilian visa. Iguazu falls within this distance. You don't need to go through all the hassle and cost of a ferry.
