Hello, first question, and post to the board. Apostilles? Are the needed in Paraguay? Specifically I am a US citizen and will be getting married in Paraguay. Do I need my prior divorce decree (from the states) translated and apostilled or simply translated by a 'certified' translator? Thanks!

Any documents, nor only transtated, but also "confirmed translation" by the Paraguayan Embassy of your country.
Anyhow: each document you have must be confirmed by the issuing country (of that document. Example: you live in USA, but married in Bulgaria. You need a official translation of your wedding papers that are "confirmed" by the Paraguayan Embassy in Bulgaria (or their representative). This costs you in between 500 to 1000 Euros to pay to your "helpers" to help you out. Stolen money out your naivety! Keep your eye OPEN !! A L L your " helpers" are more or less "banditos". Good Luck in PY !!!

Authenticate original document in PY embassy in USA. Go in Asunción to Relaciones Exteriores (14 de Mayo c/ Palma) to get it authenticated (same day but you must be there before 1PM), get it translated by some public translater, go with translation to Corte Suprema in Sajonia to get translators signature authenticated (can do it yourself, first third floor to see how much you must pay, then downstairs first pay, give off the papers beside at counter, return there after 30 mins. to get your authenticated papers back). Last step take a taxi to central register near bus terminal (barrio Hipódromo), get signature of secretary Supreme Court authenticated there at counter #4 (Justicia y Trabajo) .. is immediately...

Prices (each document):

M.Relaciones Exteriores was around Gs. 163.000

Translation: no idea, but should not be more than Gs. 100.000 each document - I saw the notary on corner in front of Migrations Office does also translations now.

Corte Suprema (authenticate translators signature): Gs. 29.911 + Gs. 4.400 "bank fee"

Central Register (Ministeria de Justicia y Trabajo - barrio Hipódromo near bus terminal): Gs. 15.000

And authenticated photocopies of your original documents and translations after all authentications (so you don't have to give off the originals) you get at whatever "Escribanía" for Gs. 5.000 each document....

From personal experience; best to marry in USA and have multiple certified copies of your marriage license. It is lightning years ahead of marrying in Paraguay AND much less problematic as far as paper work and more fees to "legalize" and notarize papers.

There is a ton of paper work and time consuming travel from one agency to another here. In the states, Texas in particular, all you do is attest that you are legally able to marry, pay your license fee, wait three days and you're all set.

After you marry, get your license back from the county clerk, simply send to the Paraguayan consulate general office which is in charge of your marriage state. You can find this by searching online for Consulate General Paraguay. I think the fee to "legalize" (stamp and sign) is $35 usd.

Do this to avoid problems down here. Plus keep in mind any divorced person has a one year waiting period in Paraguay. Good luck!

Thank you to all, been away for a bit hence the lack of responding back to everyone's input. But it is greatly appreciated.

Yes, Apostilles will be needed, and your ivorce decree will need to be legalized at the PGYan embassy.
Even though PGY did not ratify the Hague convention standard practice seems to make it easier for your documents to go through the process.
