Hello ExPat, as to affordability in Asuncion, it depends, for instance on rent you can spend as little as $100 per month but in the worst area. Check out clasipar.com.py for the real estate, the dollar right now is low at approximately $4,400 Guaranies to the Dollar. Cheers

I second Aramiss reply. Renting prices can be all over the map depending on what your comfortable with. The link he provided is a good source of ads. You can also try some of the smaller hotels for extended periods. The benefit there is you don't have to worry about leases and other formalities. Food costs can be very low if you buy local and stay away from the big chain processed foods. Overall PY is much cheaper than it's neighbors for most living costs. An excellent source of info is "Discovering Paraguay" a guidebook recently published by a US expat living in Asuncion. She is half Paraguayan and grew up between the US and Paraguay. Her book is the definitive guide to the country. Link is: http://discoveringparaguay.com/home/

arthow I know expats living in downtown for USD$200 per month to some living in the Carmelitas areas for about USD$800 in an apartment. Not sure what your budget is but finding a great local friend to help you with your search will be beneficial. You might want to consider shacking up at a local Hostel or check Airbnb.com for short terms (beginner) accommodations for a month or 2 until you get your bearings and then find something a bit longer term. This is what we advise our clients to do and it has worked wonderfully so far, no complaints outside of some real shady landlords to look out for.

Hello Arthow. Panama sounds great to me. Im curious to know why you are leaving there. I have been living in Paraguay for the last three years. It is very affordable, especially if you arte outside of Asuncion. You can rent an entire house with 3 or 4 hectares of land for $500 or less, depending where you are. In Asuncion alot of foreigners live in the Carmelitas area, which is very wealthy and nice, but will hurt your wallet. It all depends on your specific wants and needs. If you do some research on clasipar you can get a better handle on rental prices,
best of luck, Mike

Oh yes it is, they now require passports for any money exchange performed at any of the exchange businesses. best to avoid them if unless you like everyone to know your business.
