" I''m not strictly an expat - not in Peru anyway (am I cheating by using this?) Anyway, I currently live in Thailand and I am considering a career move to Lima. I''ve surfed and surfed but don''t seem to able to get any information on the cost of living there. What I''d really appreciate is an overview of the cost of living there - the rent for an average 2 bed apartment, food, entertainment, transport etc. If anyone could help me I''d be very grateful. Thanks, Vanessa PS If anyone wants info on living in Thailand, I''m more than willing to return the favour! "

Hi Vanessa and anyone else out there who's considering a move to Peru, Prices in Lima vary a lot depending on the area. The priciest areas for expats are La Molina, San Isidro and Miraflores, here you can expect to pay anywhere between $500/month and $2000 dollar a month. Yes, we're talking about Peru. But there other safe neighborhoods where you can rent something decent for $100 a month, try San Borja or the bohemian area of Barranco. I don't actually live in Lima. I live in a small place near the Chilean border called Ilo. I'm married to a Peruvian man (I'm originally from Canada) and I've been here for 7 years. I'm happy to share any information/advice with people interested in living/visiting Peru. My email address is jsuaves@yahoo.com
Sincerely, Lynda Tharratt de Núñez

Hi there, I´m originally from Holland, living in Arequipa with my husband who is originally from Ilo. Nice to hear from a foreigner in Ilo also! If I visit my suegros en Ilo, what can you suggest to visit or do in Ilo, from a point of view from a foreigner? Bye, Saskia

Hi to Saskia or anyone else living in Arequipa. I am interested in moving to Arequipa and have found very little information about things like cost of living in the city, buying real estate, etc. I assume that it costs less to live in Arequipa than Lima. Is that correct? Any information/advice that you are willing to give would be greatly appreciated.

mY HUSBAND AND i ARE considering going back to live in Lima. I'm Peruvian-American. My family lives in Miraflores and Chacarilla, two very modern and charming areas. Their report on cost of living for two is as follows: Water $35 month Gas: $15/mo. Electricity $65/mo Food for 2 $400/mo TV Cable Full service $35/mo Phone $45/mo without overseas calls Cellular basic model $25 Internet service full package $ 35 An Expresso $1.5 A ticket to the movies $5 A Doctor visit $50 but it could go down to $10 Dinner for two in nice place $30 Dinner for two in super-nice place + wine $100 Maid $120/mo. Gallon of Diesel $3
You should not spend more than $1000/mo in all these services. Have you seen the price of apartments? They are very cheap. An 130M2 apartment witn ocean view $120 thou, which could be broght down to 105. Hope this helps!

I have spent six of the last ten weeks in Lima and am going back in a couple days for another two weeks prior to moving there. What I've found is that the cost of living is cheap relative to the US. You can buy an apartment for a fraction of the cost here, and groceries are also reasonable. Going out to eat is a third-to half of what it is in the US. Going to be checking out apartments this trip so will post back when I return.

Hi,
I am moving to Lima soon and the information on this post has been very helpful...thank you! I wanted to know if anyone could share some ideas about getting around in Lima. How do most people do it? Is it feasible to live in the city without a car? If so, what are the best areas to live without a car? I was interested learning more about the neighborhoods Barranco and San Borja...can anyone share any ideas about their character and accessibility?
