Considering Relocation to Peru

I'm currently living in Ecuador but considering a relocation to Peru. I am a single, retired female so I want to live in a town/city where I can meet other expats. I'm learning Spanish here in Ecuador but I'm a very long way from being fluent, so friends need to speak English. Where do most expats live in Peru? Where can I find out about the cost of living?

Thank you so much for any info you can offer.

Expats apparently don't live where I live because I never see any. I think they live in Miraflores, San Isidro, and La Molina. As a single person you will need about $1000 per month (rent $145-600, food ($250), utils ($125), transp ($200), stuff($300), but you will want to have another $500 or so to have a little fun; you will not be hanging out with the tourists at this rate.

You can find expats in any major city of Peru .Most live in Lima but Arequipa,Iquitos, Trujillo also have some. Cost of living varies greatly depending on area with the expat areas generally more affluent and expensive to live.

Most would find $2,000.00 a month to be adequate although only $1,000.00 is required to get a retirement Visa.

Hi Jerryjan,

My name is Luis, I am not an expat, I am a peruvian spanish tutor, and a translator. Actually, there is not such a thing as the cost of living, in fact it depends on where you live ( what district) if you decide to live in Miraflores, everryything is expensive, things are triple than in most places and you can find tihngs with the same quality or even better at other "distritos" I am not trying to talk you out of coming to Miraflores no way! Im just being honest and telling you what it is like, there are hostels that are very very cheap, actually I have a US friend who is an optometrist and he pays $5 a day and this includes breakfast and it is very safe and its in Miraflores but these are very few places, well. I hope this really this information might have been of help. I have had problems with this site so if you are interested in a specialized program to REALLY learn spanish ( I have current students that are speaking spanish now) or simply if you want any advice on the cost of things and culture etc. I hope you enjoy Ecuador it's a very nice place but I am sure you will fall in love with Peru as soon as you step on to it, Good luck

I noticed your post about moving from Ecuador to Peru, and I am curious. Are you able to post as to your reasons? We too considered Ecuador for retirement, but are now considering Peru (Arequipa in particular). If you wish to send me a private message that is fine.
