I am looking for areas where expats live other than Lima. Please give any information you might have. Thanks.

I know of expats living in Tarapoto, Iquitos, Mancora, Huanuco, Huaraz, Cuzco, Urubamba, Puerto Maldonado, and Ica.

Thank you for your input. We are considering Cusco and possibly Ollantaytambo. Anyone have pros or cons on either one?

This was recently posted by a friend on the Peru expat website: I do not have an opinion, as I have lived in Peru for 10 years and have never been there.

This may change in Nov, as I will pass through on my way to/from Machu Picchu.

I love the freezing cold weather. I do not have to put my butter in the freezer because rarely can you find central heating in your apartment. I love all the rare and exotic pathogens and parasites that put gringos in the clinics and how that is the primary topic of dinner conversations. I love the amazing and colorful collection of dog crap on the street. I love how gringas girls have to be careful walking to the temple of the moon on a sunday afternoon because some cowardly miscreant is hiding in the bushes waiting to assault her. I love taking my 30 second hot shower in the morning because they have ñot developed the intricate technology to create water pressure.

Tune in for next weeks installment...

After a bit of criticism (he is from Denver) he followed up with this:

Wrong. I live in Cusco. Of course, I wrote that diatribe before my apartment was broken into (while I was sleeping) and my passport and wallet was stolen but Hey! Welcome to Cusco...though my neighbors fared much worse.

A few weeks ago I was at a bar using the sole urinal when this guy almost broke down the door and proceeded to take a whiz on a nearby trash can. You don't see that very often.

You want more stories... There are plenty. Anyone who actually lives here can tell you a few. Very few gringos stay more than six months. Wonder why? I have been here almost a year so I can speak with some authority on what it is like to live here.

It's not as bad as all that. But the expression 'Yo soy mosca' certainly applies...

There are plenty of expats in the Sacred Valley. Ollyantay is lovely but quite windy in the afternoons and also pretty small. We liked Urubamba (lots of expats there too) because it is not as touristy as Pisac or Ollyantay and has enough to do ... it depends what you're looking for in the way of community. As for the experience of the cynical person from Denver, we all get back what we give. I would agree that most foreigners don't stay long in Cusco, but not for the reasons he claims. We left because of the traffic and too many tourists. It's a lovely place to visit, but you wouldn't want to live there.

Penelope, how easy is it to find a small house or decent apartment in Urubamba? How many expats are living there, approx? How is the travel to and from Urubamba? Thanks.

This depends on what you want to pay and what you need. I have some ideas and more detailed info on a couple of places ... one is coming available in January, the other in October. Travel to and from Urubamba from Cusco costs about $2.50 in a shared car (called a collectivo) or about $45 by private taxi. The trip takes about an hour and is a very pretty drive. Ollyantaytambo, where the trains leave for Machu Picchu is about 20 minutes away and cost about $1 by collectivo. Mototaxis (motorcycle with passenger seating for 2) are plentiful for in town, which is also highly walkable. Motos cost 1 sol per trip - about 30 cents (or 1.50 soles if they have to climb the hill.) Please send me an email penelope.poole *at* gmail.com if you want specific info and contacts.
Kind regards,
Penelope

You are asking S.Am, not N. Am... The rags offer non-news and ads just like N.Am.
You have to go there and do your own footwork, ask questions, follow the leads you get. And settle on whatever you can find when you need to move into someplace.
"Menos, menos." is your reply when they tell you their gringo rents.
