i will be moving to lima end of july to begin immersion program at "el sol". it is my understanding it is up to the immegration officer at airport how long he wants to grant me under a "tourist visa" (up to 183 days?). i plan to stay at least a year in south america...either exit and reenter peru or move on to another school eg in colombia. my question: do i need a "round trip" ticket when entering peru or can i just purchase a "one way" ticket? many thanks, george

They never ask about my ticket. I am almost always here without a return ticket. You must ask them for the 183 days as soon as you give them your passport for review.

The return ticket issue is with the "Carrier" and not Peru immigration. In the event you do not have a return ticket and are turned away at the border (for any reason) the carrier is liable for your return airfare. As one way tickets are usually as/more expensive than round trips, you can buy the round trip and discard the return portion or buy a fully refundable ticket and cancel it upon arrival.

Many Thanks to pschles and alpine. I am new to this site, so sorry for delayed "thank you".
I have experience in Europe and US (living/working)...but Peru will be "on my dime" to do the Spanish immersion program...plus I have no experience in Latin America, at all. Any advice on "getting there", "living in lima" (health care, apartments, cell phones, getting around, etc"), what to look out for, etc. is greatly appreciated!
Best Regards,
George
