I would keep my current insurance to avoid problems in a year and a half (when you return) and additionally use insuremytrip.com for you coverage while travelling.

Thanks, Alpine, I just quit job (June 1) to attend immersion classes at "El Sol" in Miraflores (will arrive Aug 1)...so "on my own". (Insurance we have at company also does not do "international"--company had to get me other insurance when they sent me to Brussels for four years). I found a website "Good Neighbor Insurance", which looks like it can help me on "healthcare". Many Thanks for response! George

One of the things that's mostly on my mind is affordable and good health insurance. Can I as an American/British citizen get insurance in Peru? Any suggestions of companies? Keeping an insurance in the USA is quite expensive on a pension. Anyone with experience in this area?

The three major companies are Rimac,Pacifico,Mapfre. I understand that they will only take new subscribers who are under 60. Once you subscribe they will insure you after 60 at a much higher premium. I believe premiums (for those under 60) are about $1600.00 per year and I would recommend that you go through a broker as opposed to dealing directly with the company.

You can buy private insurance at any of the "private clinics" around Lima. It costs about $50 per month and provides discounts on room stays/tests/dental work, etc and also allows you to visit a specialist 3X month for free. It also offers a prescription card for discounts at the clinic's in house pharmacy ,But I find the prices at the local drugstores to be comparable or less.
