First concern is living accomodations. I am not looking for anything big or glamorous and am curious about the basic cost of putting a roof over my head there. Also how difficult it transportation as a rule from there to other cities? Thanks for reply

The nicest areas are Cayma, Yanahuara, and Umacollo. In that order. Safe and middle class are Jose Luis Bustamante y Rivero and Vallecito. A basic unfurnished Apt would probably run $300-$500 per month and cheaper as you move down the social ladder. Arequipa is well located and has good transport to other cities as well as the border with Chile. While the airport is quite small it does offer service to most cities in Peru. It is necessary that you are as resident, otherwise Airfares are prohibitive. There is good cheap bus service to other cities, but much more dangerous. By Bus it is about 6 hours to the border with Chile and 15 hours to Lima.
