HI there,
I am going through the process of arranging to move to Peru. The next question I have is....how easy (or hard) is it to apply for your own visa? I have been through this process before moving to Canada, so I am not put off by paperwork, hoops, etc. What I want to know is, is it possible with patience and knowledge of Spanish, or someone to help you with that, or do you really need a lawyer? I am open to both possibilities right now, but as we will not be living in Lima I am not sure if the hassle of going back and forth will be worth it. How many trips to the immigration office on average does it take?

? Are you talking about the Entry Visa and then extending it ?
or
? Are you talking about the Carnet de Extranjeria ?
The Initial tourist visa is given upon entry and can be renewed by crossing a border before expiration.

The Carnet is given based on what kind of Carnet you are applying for. For each kind there are different requirements.
All of the legwork is done in Lima preparing all of the documents and paying all of the various fees at the different agencies all over Lima. They cannot all be done in one visit and count on staying over to continue the process. After your completed application is accepted you wait until it is processed and return for a day of finalizing everything and you receive your carnet at the office of immigrations after your are thumbprinted or index finger and photographed. Plan on a day for all of that...............

I think you should make a visit to www . expatperu . com and read through the posts for some addtional info. It is another great expat site which will help you. You may also ask questions on the forums there.
