Exchange Rate, USD in Peru

I was a little surprised that you could buy soles on the street above the actual exchange rate. When I was there last week they were giving 3.52 to 1 when I checked. I have in recent years always used the ATM but if you take dollars you might save a couple $. Also I was looking at a classified news paper. It seemed in looking at rents that some may have been listed in USD...Would this be common. Is the USD used un Peru?

No, SB
The Street exchange is better than the bank but is still under the actual......... remember,, the street exchanges have to make a difference that gives a profit.
Still,, the street is better than the bank.
Take $'s from the ATM and exhange on the street for Soles

The US dollar is Peru's second currency. Some years back you would see prices in Dollars for everything in Ripleys dept store and other and in general everywhere except in the local economy - restaurants and so on......
This has changed quite a bit toward the Sole but still is commonly found.
In supermarkets sometimes the registers ring up in both dollars and soles,,,,,,,,,, RealEstate listing are often found listing both $ and s/.'s
I have found it better to deal always in soles / this way you do not have a disadvantage in someone elses assumed exchange rate..
The US and Peru and the US dollar and the sole are very linked.
PS.............. okay...........United States

Generally the nicer areas in Lima are priced in Dollars, This is not always the case though. I rented an apartment in Miraflores two years ago in Sol's and started at the equivalent of $500 and every month the rent went down till we were paying less then $400.00. In January we moved to a new place and pay in Dollars. It is a three year lease with 5% increase each year. I like to lock it in because landlords sometimes offer a good initial rate and then jack you up 20% a year.
My utilities, maintenance, property taxes are all in Sol's so I will get an advantage there. Meanwhile in less than a week the rate went from 3.52-3.45.

Just a note, in the past two weeks the Dollar has fallen from 3.52 to 3.36.
