Saw Peru made it to the top 5 places to live on under $1500.00/mth (for couple) and had to chuckle.

Living in Peru and spending in the Local Economy is very advantageous for expats...... Imports, electronics, appliances, imported foods I have found cost more than in the States and probably where you might be from. Discount distributors like Amazon and such offer prices for less than you can buy here in department stores. Cars, counterintuitive from the above are much more realistic there than the States. Also, Chinese care are beginning to get a sharehold in the Peruvian car market, especially the Commercial Truck area. They do not have the reputation of the typical more known and mainstream cars but they are improving and competing very strongly with guarantees, styles. The are not so good in the crash tests but coming up. They were much WORSE not too long ago. It is the local goods and services here that s t r eeeeee t c h your buying power so you can be stable at even 1500, and maybe a little less..
Also,, Labor for electric, construction, carpentry and such is very reasonable.......

@pistachio How is the shipping service and costs from the US to Peru? For instance a shipment of some hard to find item you are really craving from Amazon?

Amazon is by far the best for international shopping and shipping.
First, not all items ship to Peru. Click on the International shipping filter to find items that will ship and if you have an Amazon registration they will pick up from your 'shipping address on file in your account' and tell you if it will ship or not to Peru.
If it ships you will get the shipping fee and also the estimated customs tariffs so you can decide if you want to take or alter your order.
Both are accurate. Sometimes Customs is less and Amazon makes a refund.
Shipping is DHL and it takes only a few days to arrive. You can track the item. It is brought to your door.
No doubt it is pricey but considering there is something that you want or need you just have to decide. Weight is the issue.
I suggest you register at Amazon and put in a tentative Peru address and test shop some items for pricing just to see.

Hi, I have traveled extensively through LA (& West/Central Europe, Oceania, blah, blah) and am currently focused on 'retiring' to Ecuador (after deciding that the situation in Colombia is still too, uh, 'uncertain'/polarized:( I am only posting to commend Don Pistachio for his generousity. Muchas Gracias & Bien Vida!

In general how is the medical care in Peru? What about prescription drug availability? Its looking like my wife and I will be spending 6 months next year traveling in Peru looking for a place to settle down. We are thinking about 6 months in Colombia and 6 months in Peru to see how we like the change of scenery.

Interesting that you are going to Peru and Colombia to check a place to live. In Lima the medical care is excellent if you have the money to pay for it. They have first class hospitals, good doctors, nurses are great and they have modern equipments. Medical care and meds can be expensive but cheaper than in the USA.

Thanks for that huarique. Do they have national medical ins. in Peru or is it mostly pay as you go? If they have ins. what would it run cost wise? Curious why you think its "interesting" to be looking in Colombia and Peru. :) I cant say that I always take the path most traveled.

Look up these 3 companies for a health insurance quote:
PACIFICO
RIMAC
POSITIVA
This would be for private insurance.
The word on National insurance is you would never get quality or expeditious care. I do not think you would qualify for it. Not sure but I think you have to be a citizen and possibly an employee. Not sure on this.
