Hello all, Couple of questions, if you don’t mind …
Wife and I are on an exploratory / holiday trip, just spent 2 months bumbling around Ecuador, and are coming to Peru very soon. We arrive in Lima soon, but are surprised by the amount of cautionary info on Lonely Planet and a few other sites. Petty crime is known and everywhere (even where we’re at now) but is it blown out of proportion?
While here, we would like to see Machu Pichu and surrounding, but also getting conflicting info re: entrance availability, additional req’d passes (Boleto Turistico) and mandatory guides to enter. If anyone could please provide some clarifying feedback, it would be very much appreciated. There is a government website documenting maximum visitors (I’ve heard 2500/day – Yikes!), and the caledar shows that many on all days out to AUG ’17, except around the holidays. My hope is we get to Cuzco, find a local agency, and enjoy while most sane folk are having Christmas festivities. We would also like to see the sacred valley and Cuzco around this adventure. Hope is to then bus to Puno, see Lago T … and then unwind on coast somewhere.
Sorry, this feels sort of rambling, but we’re ticketed to Lima, have a big wish list, and need some local info.
Thanks in advance for any help!
Mark

While in Lima, choose a hotel in Miraflores or San Isidro districts. Do not know anything about Cusco/MP, enjoy your trip.

Alpine,
Thanks.. I've been reading about the proposed path for a few months, and dug into web resources. I heard Lima was a little rough, so we did book a well rated hostal in Miraflores. Transport next to Cuzco, and expect to haggle with agencies, but was hoping for a little local perspective. MP is well discussed, but there are apparently many other wonderful places close. MP remains on the bucket list, before or after others, but crowds are why we want to go when 'sane' people are elsewhere. I've also seen sad stories of peeps who traveled across the world, only to be denied at the gate, due to local or Gov't fussing... Money, time and opportunity lost. I don't want to be one of those. We are time and date flexible, but I'm a tad concerned about functionality on or very close to Xmas of N.Y. Any add'l leads / fdbk would be much appreciated. after the 'biggies' in the Mtns, we look fwd to some down time near coast, maybe near Trujillo. Cheers.

Common sense and a little street smarts goes a long way.
Stick to touristy areas and you should be fine. Places like Miraflores, Barranco and San Isidro is the kind of vibe you are looking for.

Well,,, what's the point of going to Tibet is your now going to leave the parking lot of the Hilton....
Sure,, those places, Miraflores, San Isidro are all safe and cozy but not typical of Peru,, in fact they are less Peru than are the other places...
I am not saying go walking at 3 am in seedy places but really,, there is a lot In Between so really,, if you want to know Peru you have to make an adventure .........

I am just home again from Lima/Tarapoto. Lots of surfers filling up lots of the Lima hostals. I got into Casa de Karen. Ramon Zavala (123) y Jose Pardo. Hispanic couple owners I walked around Myraflores for miles, including a hike back from el tren. Got me a taste of BKing and Rotten Ronny. Wow! Both their burgers were better than Canada's Stayed a week in Villa el Salvador, first. Did a browse at the south-end market..... Had 3 security cops stalking me tootin their secret messages on their whistles. Creepy! Borderline slum barrio down there. Then my GF texted me a few days ago that she was robbed at gun point going home after work.
PE is about on a par with the US for safety vs urban risks.

To CoogKelly, just curious, wondering what city your GF was robbed in. Apologies if I've missed this in earlier post. Problem w/ SA, police most likely won't help, may be the ones robbing you, depending on where you are. Of course. And what you look like.

I am now married to a Peruvian and do not use hotels or need accommodation, but when I used to come to visit, I almost always stayed in Miraflores but never in a hotel. They are way too expensive. I always looked for apartment rentals for 1 or 2 weeks. Way much cheaper than hotels plus all facilities including washer/dryer and kitchen and 2 or more bedrooms; which of course I never needed. Make sure that you have a good location - I stayed close to the Oval. Be sure to ask full cost; some may want to charge extra for electricity. I also stayed in a hotel in pleasant San Borja called Las Palmas on 3 visits. Staff were great. Seemed like mostly a conference hotel. Very clean, reasonably priced and 10 minutes to Miraflores. That was at least 6 years ago. Live close by now and it still looks good from the outs whenever I pass by.
