I understand the rent's low and the climate's great there.Could somebody retired on 1,700 or less fill me in about the crime situation? I'm interested in becoming a pensionado, and wanna compare with Pereira, Colombia. Thanks!!

Pereira is said to be 7% cheaper than Arequipa. In terms of crime the top three are Callao, Lima, Arequipa. I have only lived in Callao and Lima ( best areas of both) so due not think much about crime using the usual precautions.

While it is true that Lima is very troubled with crime and surco seems to be one of the more troubled areas Arequipa is not in the top 3 crime cities of Peru. We live part time in the city and find it quite enjoyable as well as very little crime. of the 5 citis it is true that some have issues. if you look at size I guess most cities have issues. go visit dont take some ones word. Check it out for your self.
costs are very reasonable.

Well, we retired here about six months ago and are enjoying it very much. Only took a couple of months to get Rentista Visa. Have not noticed it being a dangerous place at all. Have walked home at midnight from shows at the large UNSA stadium and weren't worried at all. I'm sure there are places you wouldn't go in the wee hours of the morning but, for the most part, it seems pretty safe to us. There are always lots of people out and about in the center of town.

Keep in mind that since you are retired, Colombia's Healthcare system is far better than Peru and even ranks higher than USA and Canada.
