Lake Titicaca

Post New Topic

Our New Mexico news channel has just posted an article revealing the fact that the lake is not well. Perhaps this is common knowledge in Peru, but I was shocked. Empty paint buckets, trash, dead frogs and high levels of mercury and hypodermic needles. And an indigineous population depending on the lake. Can anyone enlighten me further. It seems from the tone of the piece that the primary culprit is tourism
Is this the case?

hi.....

I don't know how tourism would result in Hypodermic needles, paint cans and mercury in the lake.....
Certainly, lots of false facts are presented by the liberal media to promote climate change, global warming and biased "science" through the news, internet and TV-Cable.

I will say that in Peru there is international mining concerns that affect the environment with very little governmental oversight.

More, the Governments in All of South America do very little in terms of regulation and environmental protection. In fact, even public safety is rarely of Any Concern.

First world ethics and aspirations don't exist. For the most part - Vast % of the population makes a daily sprint to scrape a little money together to survive.....

Oh,, there may even be some rules,, and they stay On Paper and are rarely enforced....

It is pretty much Your On Your Own....with a remote sense of government or rules far out in the background....

If you read closely, he actually did perform a decent job of attempting to answer your question. He brought up the fact that there are mining concerns in the area and that a strong regulatory framework or ethos doesn't really exist in Peru. After all, I would imagine that he should know since he lives there. In addition, logic would dictate that it doesn't help the situation that the lake straddles two nations, thus further complicating the control of pollutants. This happens quite frequently on the Canadian and Mexican border regions in the US.

I live partly in Peru but have not been to Titicaca. I am sure you have howeve looked this up on the internet - reports with images. From my Peruvian family, yes, the lake is highly polluted.

Lake titicaca is somewhat poluted but it has been cleaned up some as well as many current projects to improve the water. Fishing is great! boating is fantastic. ask people that live there or near there. dont take words from someone that lives 20 hrs away! i live in Puno right next to the lake.

Pistachio left me in the first couple of sentences referring to false claims of warming based science. So at that point I new it was an agenda. Don't know where he is either (mentally or physically) but doesn't seem to have been to the Lake to answer this. I am in U S but would not answer questions about Great Salt Lake unless at least have read extensive news reports or have friends in Utah who have seen it. Just comes across as self indulgent BS, talking about all of SA as though homogeneous. Same everywhere,. Bolivia same as Argentina? If mining concerns are polluting an iconic lake that is famous worldwide and an indigenous population that is a big deal. Do need a more comfortable armchair. Typical of answers from some on internet in response to a simple questions. Sounds like answers on tests I used to give in college when trying to BS for partial credit. Who knows, maybe its a hidden gem and I'm just misreading it.

Also, thanks to little Paul for great answer. Same pollution problems to some extent at the big lake in Nicaragua, I noticed while at Ometepe. Fresh water sharks I used to read about as a child seem to be gone, and development proceeds apace (and this technically a Marxist government). Turning parts of Island into a strip mall, or so it seems.

It is quite obvious.

We are in massive trouble w/ environmental changes due to climate change. Check out latest on Great Barrier Reef and warming of oceans. If you appreciate the falsehoods and fabrications or politicians and fake experts subsidized by corporations I would urge you to please look more closely and get your head out of the sand. Checkout the dust bowl and great depression of the 1920s and 30s for a modern day of environmental disaster. The planet will recover, but the 7 billion or so inhabitants, not so much. Same applies to Peru as everyplace else.

An absolutely false narrative.
Climate Change occurs as it always has over thousands of years.

Whether or not climate change is due to human activity remains Unknown.

Climate change enthusiasts talking points and rhetoric is scientifically False. Al Gore & Leonardo D,, spokesmen for the false narrative ignore the true science in favor of their agenda.

I have watched this ideological diatribe for some time now, and the ever present comment resides in my head, until I am forced to voice it. SHUT THE F UP!!

Ahem, I moved to Peru to retire and continue to enjoy my life. Why are you all trying to spread hatred and anger?

Why not embrace the short time we all have on this wonderful planet, and instead try to make someone happy?

If we can make life better for only one person, then we have succeeded in life's purpose.

In other words, as my grandmother used to say, if you have nothing nice to say...

Forgive my ignorance. I have never heard either Al Gore or de Caprio claim to be scientists? I was mistaken also in my understanding that their "false narratives" are based on reports from scientific findings? Science has become an alternative fact.
I am so flabbergasted by the just too many know-nothings full of sound and fury signifying nothing.

Whenever anyone gets fired up about a topic, like climate change. If they really believe it is such a big issue. What are they personally doing about it? Do they ride a bike to work? Are they using solar panels? Are they driving a hybrid or a mini cooper? If someone doesn't believe the official narrative they should not be attached. Also, anyone who really wants to know the truth about such issues should follow the money.

When people get all worked up about issues like climate change, I like to ask what are they personally doing about it. Are they riding a bike to work? Are they using solar panels, perhaps driving a hybrid or a mini cooper. If someone does not believe the official narrative, they should not be attached. Where is the love? Where is the tolerance to ideas? Wow, if opinions and expressions are shut down, this world will be a sad, sad place to be.

Pistachio, the name says it all, doesn't it. You remind me of the wannabe g/banger friends I had a child who would go out to bars and get into ( look for) fights and ALWAYS blame the other guy. Usually get their butts kicked, too. Don't read it if your delicate sensibilities are wounded.

I do like this response. People may say this is not the platform for that, but where really is the platform for the future of our planet. Also it is a more useful self searching question than a political argument that may not have much value/effect.
What are some of the things I do and what I could do- put all plastics, foil, cans, bottles newspaper/(paper products), in our building recycle bins; collect items for groups for charity, such as my sister in law and a friend are collecting plastic bottle caps. I just retire so I can afford the time to use public transportation - buses, trains, shared taxi. My one guilt is limiting the number and length of showers in a day.

Pistachio, you really are a self important, ignorant tool. Your Anthony Weiner cheap shot right off the top reveals much. Ugly American overseas. Where is your scientific evidence on the unbelievable con job 98%+ of the scientific community are pulling on all us poor 'boobs' ( your 1950s word).
Fulloflife, how can you assume anything about what a poster on the effects of climate change is, petsonally, doing about it. And why do you care? Do you asdume the arr doing nothing? Why? They are at least trying to talk about it. That's something.
