" Hello, I am a 29 year old American seeking employment in the Philippines. Currently, I''m a Network Administrator with three years experience specializing in Microsoft NT Networks along with MS Exchange, SMS, and various Cisco products as well. In addition, for two of the three years, I have supervised the MIS Department of my company''s two locations (connected via WAN). I''m trying very hard to find an opportunity with a US company so that I can be paid in Dollars rather than Pesos if possible. Though money isn''t my main motivator by any means, the typical Philippine peso salary wont allow for living expenses in the Philippines along with the bills that I''ll still have in the United States (i.e. student loans). One thing I''ve noticed is that most of the employment ads that I see are usually looking for high level executive positions or at a minimum, people with 10 - 15 years of experience behind them. Is there no place for those of us who graduated college less than 5 years ago? Even if we have technical skills and experience on the latest products and equipment…and people skills to go with it? My search is limited to the Philippines because I''m not willing to wait years on end for the US Immigration & Naturalization Service to process a Spousal Visa for my wife (a Philippine National), so I''ve decided to make the move...now, all I need is a job. It would seem logical to think that, in a third-world country like the Philippines, many companies would be very hungry for technology professionals to bring them up to speed so they can get ahead and take advantage of recent advancements in e-commerce and other communication technologies...but maybe I''m doing something wrong, or looking in the wrong places. Any assistance or advice would be very greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. "

" Mr. Dodge, Many Filipinos with your credentials work for considerably less than you would find adequate. So many, in fact, that probably half are trying to leave the country to find employment. Have you applied for your wife''s visa? My esperience indicates she could be on a plane to the U.S. within a week after presenting the required documents to the U.S. Embassy in her country of residence. I seldom view this site. Please email me directly if you have questions on any of the above. ows@owsmith.org Oscar Smith "

" Assistance finding US Employer Luke, Both AT&T and Lucent Technologies have offices in Makati and Cebu. I retired from AT&T recently and now live permanently in Tacloban City, Leyte Philippines. The good news is there are plenty of American companies with braches in the PI. The bad new is they usually do not hire Americans at a US pay scales, rarely if ever. Why should they as Mr. Smith stated there are 100s of Filipino''s with great qualifications that will work for 1/4 or less of what you would like to receive. Most companies seem to have one or two US based executives that rotate in and out and the rest of the staff is local. I worked for AT&T International for 11 years prior to retirement and could not get a job in Manila, although I came here every year for meetings. I hope this is not totally discouraging. Give it a try anyways, but your best bet may be to possibly switch to a US based company that has a branch here. However that would not be a quick fix to your problem. Bringing you wife to the US is probably the quickest solution for you now. Don''t feel too bad in 1972 it took my wife 8 months after we were married to join me, but that''s another story, and it shouldn''t take any where near that long now.. Good Luck, Eric Lilley "

" Lynn, Why would any company pay anyone $8.00 per hour, when they can hire a labor for 8 hours for less than you want per hour. The minimum wage in Manila is now 233.00 Pesos per day. That''s about P30 per hour, or less than 75 cents U.S. per hour. If you want a high wage here, and $8.00 an hour is very high, you have to have a very specific skill that some company needs and can''t find locally. There are thousands of strong, smart unemployed Filipinos that can probably work circles around the average American in this heat, so lots of luck. Best regards, Eric Lilley "

" Eric is right, i just finished a 4 year contract in the Philippines and luckily had a great job with a 6 figure US$ salary. I''d love to go back but have been having a hard time finding a job. I do however have something for you my friend. Try Global Sources www.globalsources.com . I have lots of friends who have worked there. They are always looking for US or Canadian young expats and they pay very well (US$30-65K depending on your experience). You would be in the IT department or the Interative Media Department. Good Luck. They are located in the Citibank Building on Paseo De Roxas. Checkout their corp website for a contact tel number. The HR Manager is Rufus Nalasco. Global Sources is an Internet/e-commerce company. I have refered several Canadian''s to the company and they were hired. Finally, I would like to ask Eric where in the Philippines he is retired and what is his monthly overhead, rent, etc. Andrea P.S.--maybe i''l see you at Heckle & Jeckle sometime "

" I, too, would love to work in PI. I''ve visited northern Luzon (Zambales) a couple of times in the last year, and fell in love with the land and people. I have over 20 years of IT experience, and I''ve been sending resumes for the last several months through monstor (they do have an international search). I would be happy making enough money just to get by. Maybe even do something ""rewarding"", like teaching. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks! "

" Joe, I forget to mention that there are alot of Computer and IT schools popping up in Makati and Manila. Enrollment into these comuter schools is doubling annually and Manila is quickly becoming a hotbed for skilled IT kids. I''m sure they need teachers. Next time you are in manila check out a few of the schools and just pop in and meet with the Dean. They are very receptive and I''m sure they would love to talk to you. Do you want me to get you the names of a few of the schools? "
