" Good day, I am new to the board. I''m hoping to make friends amongst those of you living in the Philippines, as I plan to move there shortly. I retired from the US Army after several overseas tours and I enjoy the great blessing of being married to a wonderful lady from Negros Occidental who is a college math teacher. While we wish the political situation were a little more stable, especially with regard to the south, retiring to the PI will fulfill our life long dream. My wife, of coarse, knows a great deal about the islands, but I have additional questions regarding the particulars of moving to and living in the PI, i.e. what kind of passport/visa is best for me, (my wife retains her Philippine citizenship) are there PI taxes for US income, where can I hunt wild boar, will I be able to get NBA games on cable or satellite TV? You know, those life and death kinds of issues. Many thanks for your time, Ray "

" Ray, Don''t slow down, for I am hopefully right behind you on the way there. My Asawa and I are not there yet neither, but I get most of my tidbit information from this web site: http://www2.mozcom.com/~rao_cabr/ This is the web site for the Retired Affairs Office in the former Clark Air Base area - they list other RAO sites throughout the Philippines. Hope this is helpful too. My Asawa is Ilongga from Oton, Iloilo on Panay in the Visayas. We are currently here in the Central Florida area, but I have a request in for reassignment to Manila. Hope to see you and everyone else there. Ray "

" Ray. I have a second home in Davao and my wife and I go back and forth. Her more than me. While security is always a concern just be nice , not loud or quick to respond to situations you may not fully understand. Philipinos smile a lot, for lots of reasons. Smile , but don''t stare. Also remember most are very poor. Don''t let it bother you if they try to get a few extra pesos from you. Remember a peso is about 2 cents. A little generosity never hurts.Philipinos are some of the most industrious people you will ever meet, but they are poorly paid. Security and health care are two big issues, try to plan our your needs in those areas. In terms of life style, I have phone service, cable and soon my area will have an internet connection. We also have two maids and a dog. PS: Don''t run for Mayor ( that''s a joke!). Best of luck, Brian "

" Ray I currently live in Texas also and we own a house in BayBay Leyte. My asawa and I hope to retire at least part time in the Philippines in a year or two. If your wife is currenty a citizen of the Philippines, she can buy property there. I watched the NBA playoffs the last time I was there, so yes you can get the important things in life. Good luck to both of us. "

" Dear Ray, Beware of people selling you wild boar hunting trips. This is a well known scam, but some may be legit. You say your wife know a lot about the islands, ""of course."" I have been here for ten years and find the Filipinos do very little traveling and generaly know very much about the country. I hope your wife is an exception. The best visa for you depends on a lot of things. Your wife has retained her citizenship by default. A law was passed so even if she became a citizen of another country, the Philippines still grants her rights. I believe this law is rather new. You then, can get a permanent resident visa for about $1,00) processing, after attending a hearing, and a lot of other stuff. We hav discussed these and many other things about living in the Philippines on the Yahoo list ""Living in the Philippines"" You can access that list, non commercial, by going to www.geocities.com/livinginthephilippines/index.html. Best regards, Don "
