" Hello, I have begun to read some of your message posts and they seem full of great suggestions and direction. I hope someone could do the same for me.... My wife is originally from the Philippines and we have talked of spending a significant amount of time there (most likely in or near Manila) at some point in our lives. We are currently without any little ones running about but have plans for one or two in the future. My wife is starting her grad school in the fall for her Masters in Non-Profit Mgt., while I will be getting my MBA. We both plan to be done in 2004. I have been working for a commercial bank for the past 3 years, predominately in Middle Market lending and now Private Banking (NYC commercial real estate concentration). My question to you all is (enough background, huh?)-when in our lives is a good time to spend a few years in Manila? We could do it fresh out of grad school and before we have kids or after we have seasoned a bit, both professionally and as a family. Is there an optimal time in one''s career that he or she should look to work abroad? Any advice on the subject would be welcome. Thank you. "

" Brandon, I am an American married to a Filipina. We haven''t been to Philippines in years but know many people there. From what I know, professional jobs in the Philippines, even in Manila, pay a fraction of comparable jobs in the U.S. I think the only hope of a good salary would be to get a job at a major U.S. company that has a Manila office, and lobby for a transfer. My wife and I are thinking seriously of living in the Phils someday, but only after we retire. The cost of living in the Phils can be quite low -- but it can also be high if you live in a Manila area favored by expats, such as Makati. Perhaps someone who lives there now can offer more up-to-date advice than I can. Good luck. Dave Harrison "

" My wife is also a Filipina and would suggest you get some experience in your careers first but keep your eyes open and actively search for positions available in Manila at the same time you start a family. It''s REALLY GREAT to be in the Philippines with full time maids and ""yayas"" ( babysitters ) when your kids are under 8 years old. The first 4 years of catholic schools in Metro-Manila are often superior to American public schools but about 3rd or 4th grade I''d recommend taking your kids back to the States for the many extra-curricular activites aaavailabe there among other things. Unless of course if you have enough capital and are interested to start your own small businesses; if so the Philippines is a DREAM for small business people just starting out. http://www.geocities.com/TheTropics/Resort/2276/ http://www.geocities.comTheTropics/Island/7106/ "
