The Philippines can be a good place for a retiree. It's cheap and the people are friendly. There are some setbacks, of course. But in general life can be good here. I've been here 11 years now. Anyone considering retiring here is welcome to contact me for impartial advice.

Hi there,

I was wondering if you could help me. I am a Researcher for London Weekened Television. We are currently thinking of doing a programme about UK expats in Phillippines. Is it the kind of place that has younger expats in significant numbers or is it the type of place where one is more likely to find retired expats?

many thanks

Kumusta ka, Able -

11 years, you must like it very much.

It is easy to read about the good points of any place, but I wonder if you would say more about
the setbacks, or what were the unexpected
and, possibly, unpleasant, surprises from
living there. To know in advance, would help
life flow more smoothly.

I will be arriving in RP on 14 August - in only
two months. So, you see, this is not just
an idle question.

Salamat po.

Dear Trooper,

I am about to seperate out of the military and was looking for employment in the Philippines. My decision to look for employment in the Philippines if foor two reasons. 1) My love of the Filipino people. I have never met a people so friendly and understanding. 2) My wife of going on two years is from the Philippines and I would love for my family to live and grow up that enviorment. I was wondering if you had any tips for me to find employment. I have been in the Military for 5 years and have substantial experiance with computer systems as well as manageral expereance. Any advise you could provide would be greatly appreceated.

I am a young(ish) Brit that wants to immigrate to Manila with my wife and 2 very young children. Firstly, is this a safe place to set up home. Secondly, how does the cost of living compare to good old rip off Britain!?

Any advice most appreciated. By the way, we have drizzle, fog, rain and cold mist here in Cornwall!

I'm a British expat in the Philippines. If you are interested, I have a 300 sq meter lot at a very nice development in Tagaytay (club membership included). I'm asking 1.5 million pesos which is about the going rate at that development. I was originally going to build there for myself but later got hooked on a small farm lot in Batangas where I hope to start growing vegies and some fruit. The Tagaytay lot therefore is no longer a need for myself.

I want to move to Manila (from San Antonio TX) and am NOT retired yet - 57YO but would like to find an American company that would be interested in hiring me there. I am an high school English teacher and have been trying to find a teaching position there but it hasn't been good even though and probably because of being my age and having eighteenyears of teaching experience. Truth is that I am involved with someone there and I have been there a couple of times but would need a good job to be able to support both of us while I am there. Naturally this employment would help me with a work visa as well. Any suggestions. A while back I saw an ad for a cell phone company that was looking for someone to teach English to their employees but like a dummy I did not copy it or note the info and now I deeply regret it. That would be aperfect job for me there. Any inside tips would greatly be appreciated. Please email me at a_winslow@earthlink.net and would sincerely appreciate as answer as soon as possible. Thanks ,Able,a million and if you get me out there successfully - I will take you out to dinner for the favor!

Alan

Greetings, Abel

I genuinely hope you found happiness in your tropical paradise.

Via the internet, I met a lovely lady from Naawan (30 kms west of of Cagayan De Oro), and I am seriously considering moving to the area. Perhaps you can be kind enough to enlighten me regarding the expat (un)employment situation in the region. My love interest explains that an owner of a sari sari store can generate a modest, yet suitable income.

Any sound advice is appreciated.

Best regards

I don't think a sari sari store is going to generate the 50,000 pesos per month you will need to live. On the other hand, a piggery can generate much more.

Move from Cornwall to Manila, are you crazy??????. Go live in Central London for a year, then if you totally love London City life. Then spend a year in Manila you will think London was the best place ever.
There are so many computer experts wanting to come here and work, the market would be swamped within days if these positions existed. The ONLY way you can work here is to work for an American company who will relocate you to Philippines. Other than that you will work for absolute peanuts, even if you can find work at all.
Bring your young kids here to live? Why do you think the education system is better here? Maybe in some of the most expensive private schools it may be near but generally the education is fairly poor in my opinion.
For me i think trying to move to Philippines if you are younger and have to work to support your family is a no no the wages here are very very low unlessyou were very lucky to be sent here by an American company. As able said for a retiree Philippines can be great, your pension here will go way further than it will at home thats for sure. As for English teachers here the average wage for a teacher is 10,000 php per month, probably higher in a good private school. Mainly femail teachers because of abuse in the past.
I live here with my filipiuna wife, i live very modestly on a small pension i hire a car occasionally and trave,l stay in cheap hotels, food can be cheap, booze and tobacco are cheap, if that's your thing. Many many beautiful girls. Warm, hot weather all year round beautiful beaches. Retire here yes, try to find a job here no. Live on Minanaou island no no no no no, ( my opinion only) CDO I have been told is relatively safe, 30km south of the city? Not sure lots of Muslim rebels who are now siding with Isis, hmmmmmm make you own mind up about that one.

Simonben you have 2 very young children where do you think you will educate them here? You think UK is a rip off? A man on his own or with his wife etc. Is one thing its a risk but you are adults but young children? You will really have to do your homework thoroughly. Come here to the place you have chosen to live, inspect the schools and EVERYTHING they do. Really good private schools do exist but they are hellishly expensive. Public schools are cheap as you only pay for books etc, but education standards are very low. You would be condeming your kids to a life of low education, little or no prospects to work in Philippines or abroad. Think very very carefully my friend. You will have to come here, take off those rose tinted glasses. Watch the tv read local papers see what goes on in the area you have chosen. Dont think this is an island full off lovely happy smiley people life here is harsh. No police force that is in the slightest bit effective. Hospitals that are very inadequate, and can be dirty, cant just nip up to see a doctor. No ambulance service to think of, and what ambulances there are, nowhere near as well as equipped as in uk. No air ambulance here mate. With very young children think very hard

A lot of the posts I do on here may seem extremely negative, I understand that. Its easy to look at the Philippines as tropical paradise and in some beautiful areas it is. Live here can be great if your health is good if you have an outside income, pension etc the more you have the better you life will be. I have stayed in the lonely provinces, experienced the regular power cuts the difficulty in getting a young child treated with a broken arm. I saw the beauty of the mountains the waterfalls, palm tree lined roads. But to live there for the rwst ofmy life? I couldnt do it, but some of course love the solitude.
I am a towny born and bred Londoner, but hate the city life now. So a compromise, live in or very near a town, everything on hand really good market etc etc etc. Easy to drive to anywhere, baguiou, Lucena Batangas Tagaytay LA Union best of both worlds. But I am a realist been coming here since 1995 thought I had seen most things thought I knew it all, yes it was easier for me to settle here but visiting and living here are just poles apart.
I have met a few foreigners here and have a few good friends Two English guys quite close, but I have met some real oddball expats as well.
So bottom line is would I recommend a someone to retire here. Most definitelyyes

@chance2013 I have been living in Mindanao since 2011 off and on. I am retired on $1700 a month Canadian which is 79 cents American. I support 2 teens and a 10 yr old. My wife is a Filipina. I live in a place 30 minutes outside Davao City called Prudential Village, Bbg. Daliao, Toril , Davao City.
I agree with a lot of the negative things you said. Most of the English spoken is very sketchy except in the malls. I have easy access to a great doctor who speaks perfect English. He charges me 375 php a visit. I would not live in Davao City after trying it. Too dirty, polluted, congested, and boring unless you are a mall rat. From my nice 2 BR home and garden it is a 5 minute walk to Vales Beach which is pretty clean. I swim most every day and strike up conversations with the Filipinos on the beach who are really friendly and approach me because I am the only foreigner there. Mr. Vales is Davao's Chief of Police & there is never any trouble here. My neighbor operates a tricycle and I pay him 40 php per trip or 350 php all day/night. My wife tells me that is 150pjp too much but he helps out carrying packages, waits for me, and helps out in whatever he can. He used to be a bodyguard. I don't care for Filipino food that much, I don't buy dairy except butter. Bakeries are good. Fresh coconut milk Buko is exceptional. I eat a lot of mangoes. My main problem living here is boredom. My iPod and the beach are what sustains me. I read, but run out of books so I'm buying a Kindle and bringing my drawing materials next September. It takes me about 2 months to readjust to living here since the pace is about 10 times slower than anything I have experienced in Canada. My 3 girls are Filipina so the family life works out fine. I return to my home on Vancouver Island before May because of tax filing and a large garden that can get out of control fast. I rent the house in September when the weather there is still fabulous, November is awful. I have no complaints. I don't go to the bars to avoid the beautiful and seductive young Filipinas since my marriage is really great. It's a slow and relaxing life, but I am 71. I would recommend it as a great retirement option since it is so cheap to live here. You just need a good plan for dealing with boredom and live close to a nice beach. General Santos is a nice city too, a little further out. Please don't knock Mindanao. The problems are in ARRM and the solutions are close to finalization. BIFF is bloodied and on the run, MILF is working with the government. The biggest danger here is from pickpockets. Philippine Starr News has a great app news feed. My Facebook has all the other news and information feeds. I regularly post on Al Jazeera doing written battle with all the radical Muslims who comment on news their news stories. It's incredible the hate for the West, the bias, and the ignorance.

Good summary standupguy. I would still be careful with Muslims, especially ones who have pledged alliegence to ISIS. A 5 minute walk to the beach sounds great!

MILF peace deal conditions provided intelligence to PH army that resulted in successful raids on BIFF positions, command posts, and weapons cashes leaving many dead rebels and much fewer PH army loaves according to the Phillipine Star News This result allowed the army to withdraw from ARMM so more than 10,000 residents could safely return to their homes. Your comment about Kenya makes no sense in this context. If you are suggesting I am Muslm or an Infidel you are wrong on both accounts. Philippine Star News has a good app for download should you wish to inform yourself on the facts.

Standupguy I read your post with interest, as you asked I will not knock Mindaou at all. Never did knock it just had my opinion. But really in this case i am wrong because i dont have first hand knowledge of living there, so i will not say anything again. You are right
