car/scooter rental

I am visiting Cebu for a week in the beginning of April and would like some wheels. When I look at car rentals they are more than I pay in the US and they usually include a "driver". What's up? Anyway to get around for $10-20 a day other than by foot?

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Rankin,

I have tried several times to look for a reasonable car rental here like what we have in the US, unfortunately, it does not exist. I couldn't event get that low of a rate if I borrow from one of my siblings! Anyway, since you will be going to Cebu, it will be best to take a cab. Cebu is a small island and you will probably be paying $2 per trip. Just have them do the meter. When you get to your hotel, ask for the number of a local taxi that you can call anywhere you are. Most likely those are the taxis that you can trust. I've been here for two years now, and I only trust TAI (Toyota Alabang Taxi group) since I live here in Alabang. They usually can pick me up from everywhere and bring me home safely. It's more expensive because it's a fixed rate, but my security is more important.

I would like to call on the Cebu expats, perhaps you can help Rankin. I won't be there in Cebu this April, but I am planning to go there by May. My family and I would love to meet with Expat group in Cebu.

Let us know how else we can help you.

HI rankin,

if you don't have a large group to transport, you can get a scooter rental fairly cheap just about anywhere. 500-1000 php/day depending on the condition and size of scooter. i usually get a "off-road" looking Honda or yamaha 200cc for about $800/day.
