You definitely don't need to use a travel agent. The best sites to use are Bookingbuddy or Kayak. Both sites allow you to compare every possible flight along with which flights are non stop, direct or multiple stopovers. You can also choose by shortest flight time etc.. From these sites you can compare Expedia prices along with Orbitz, Travelocity, Cheaptickets, Priceline and everyother company. Different companies can charge from $100-$300 difference for the exact same flight. They all have different allowances from the Airlines so when one flight may not be available on Oribitz you could still find it available on Travelocity. Check all the different companies once you decide the itinerary that you want.

I fly from New York. Over the years I've flown almost every Airlines. Today for me the best flight is the shortest travelling time. I fly Cathay Pacific. Non stop JFK-Hong Kong, 2 hour layover then to Manila. It's the fastest flight time ever. My wife with our 2 year old doesn't want the long flight leg without a stop. So we will be doing a different route in the future. Another thing to check is to make sure the price that you are being quoted includes all fees and taxes. Some sites are not showing you the final prices until you pay. Compare apples to apples. It's always better to arrive in Manila during non rush hour times. Ideally after 9pm or during mid-day (10am-3pm), otherwise your first experience may not be very pleasant.
