dangerous or safe in the Philippines?

If you are the paranoid type of person or the boastful type of person the Philippines is not for you. If you are adventurous, you like taking some risks with the possibility of great rewards life in the Philippines could be great. You need to be street smart as a foreigner to survive happily in the Philippines. If you are not street smart it will be on the job training that "could" cost you harm or a lot of money. There is danger everywhere, but the naïve are always a lot more at risk. You can walk or drive down the wrong street in any big town or city in the world and get in trouble. Would I walk in Luneta Park in Manila at midnight? Probably not. Would I walk in Central Park in NYC? Definitely not!!!

Like my husband said, every place has its own danger. Whether your here or there, danger is around, now it's up to you how to be cautious and smart wherever you are.

When in Manila you must definately keep your wits about you......act smart......and be strong but friendly......For 5 years I explored every corner of this city.....wandered sober and half drunk down dodgy roads and shared redhorse and karaoke with locals in some of the poorest and roughest areas.....I never had a single problem or saw any bad attitude......we shopped in Baclaran and Divisoria markets at 2am and never got harrassed or felt uneasy........the worst hassle I ever had was being hassled to share some tambay of beer or brandy with locals on the street while being called Joe.....

Never drop your guard.....dress for your environment.......and never act more important than the people around you........Philippines might be dangerous butI feel more scared walking past pubs at closing time in UK or Australia.....

Just got word that a drug dealer was shot dead by a local vigilante group 2 blocks from our house there. Follow advice given here and you are fine. Sell drugs or act like an ass and you are toast. I have never had a problem in the 15 years I have been going there that's why I am moving there for good.

I reported the "niggas" comment when it was made, but nothing was done about it, at least not yet.

I wouldn't say "white folk" unless you're trying to let everyone know your white for some equally offensive reason. Can you tell what race I am? Does it matter?

He doesn't mean anything disrespectful. In the Philippines, the Filipinos actually call us white. It's actually a respectful thing.they like to be white themselves.they believe that white skin is beautiful. It's a term that they use alot it's called puti.(translated is white)

Half the women in the world spend their life trying to get a tan, the other half spend their life trying to get whiter, whilst dove caters for everyone!!

Fake tan and whitening soap!

My Filipino friends tell me how they want my white skin, I tell them I have spent my life trying to get to their beautiful shade of brown!!

Crazy world

So true mrsP. I am a big believer that there is actually no such thing as beauty. It simple cannot exist, when there are so many varied opinions as to what beauty actually is.

If only that was still the case, I suspect a modern day William would write 'beauty is in the eye of the media'

That's exactly what I've always said about the noses. They remind me of when I was a kid and we really loved our teddy bears.
But how strange is it that Filipinos love our huge beaks? Lol

MrsP, hard to get a tan in the home land. Every time it got warm enough to take off your shirt the midges would eat you alive!

If you look for trouble here you will find it, but be careful many men carry guns and they use them then run to the mountains. Much easier to be polite and respectful no road rage. The filipino guys might be small but they can be tough buggers

That is good advice and can be a general rule for wherever you travel. You do not want to get in trouble with the law when you are a guest and not a citizen.

As a generalization, Filipinos are hot tempered. When they get very angry they never consider the consequences of their actions. Most westerners may get angry enough to kill but they don't want to end up in jail, so they control their actions. Filipinos do not think ahead when that happens. So yes, don't mess with an angry Filipino whether a guy or gal.

I graduated from the South side ghetto Hyde Park High School. There were streets you didn't walk down. Too many gang member punks with guns there now. That was dangerous place. The risk in the Philippines is different, more like entrapment. Muggings don't happen in Davao because the crime buster Mayor is feared.

I went to the small village of Toka near Isulan. Mostly rice and corn farmers and guns for hire. I was only the second Westerner to go there in the Villages' history. My wife's octogenarian aunt lives there and also her young nephew who shot a man in Toril in an argument. The loss of face is a big issue in the culture. Filipino anger management doesn't exist.
They go from 0 to a 100 in an instant, whereas in the west, there are more stages of escalation.

Of course it can be dangerous here every shopping mall, gated community, McDonalds, banks etc etc has armed gaurds that cost money, not done for nothing think about it. I hear so many say i grew up on the streets i can look after myself. Seen some really arrogent westerners here a brit was shot dead just last week stopped 6 bullits from his own security gaurd just because of a heated argument. Filipinos might be small but some are tough little buggers believe me. I keep my head down got into a bit of a fight luckily the police stopped it but the Filipino was not going to give up he was not not phased by my size at all. So it it dangerous here? It most certainly can be.
