registering motorcycles/cars

I agree if you buy something new of course you should make sure it's properly registered in your name. It's quite valuable and you want it in your name. There are several reasons why maybe you shouldn't register a used car or motorcycle properly. If you are ever involved in an accident in the Philippines you will definitely get screwed. It has happened to me a several times, an I'm sure it will happen thousands of more times to any foreigner living in the Philippines. The general rule of thumb is leave the accident before the police get there. If someone is trying to stop you for whatever reason, if at all possible, don't stop. If you stop, you'll pay. If you don't stop and they catch you, you apologize and you'll also pay. Many times if you leave the scene, whether it be a traffic violation or an accident you get away. If the car or motorcycle is not transferred in your name yet, they can't find you to rip you off. You can also use a false address and your real name if you are worried about reselling it someday. This is one of the reasons why rich people use drivers, the drivers get in trouble and the rich person doesn't get ripped off by the police or the victim if it's a vehicular accident. I know this stuff doesn't sound ethical but it's part of life in the Philippines.

Not victim, I mean anyone else involved in the incident.

I'm sure some people will get turned off by my comments of leaving the scene before authorities arrive. Let me tell you my story, then you'll understand. When I was a young medical student a few days before summer break I was riding my motorcycle in Manila, someone without paying attention or respecting a motorcycle ran from the sidewalk in front of my bike to catch a jeepney on the other side of the rode. I had a Simpson helmet on which at the time was the best made. I wiped out, my head hit the ground and the guy also went down. My bike was badly damage and I was bleeding quite a bit but I got on my damaged bike to get out of there to avoid vengeance from friends or relatives and the authorities. The guy was still on the ground not moving. As I was taught, the next day I changed my plane ticket and left the country within 24 hours. Within 48 hours they were at my door looking for me. I had already left the country. Once they detain you, you are very vulnerable to their demands. The guy was in a coma from his head hitting the ground after running into my motorcycle in the middle of the road.
