Hello to all: This is my 1st post here, but I have been reading this forum for about 7 or 8 months. This is my 1st trip ever to The Philippines. I am arriving at The airport in Cebu on Aug. 28th, late in the evening, and will be there until mid Feb. If there is anyone in the Cebu City area that can give me some much needed guidance, I would be so grateful. I need to know things like, is there a certain taxi service that one could recommend that is most importantly, safe? Where is the best place from touchdown to convert $USD to PP? What area in the city is a good place to stay for the 1st week or so, till I find a place to live? I am a 60 yr. old male, but retired at 45 here in the states. I really need to learn the ropes as they say, but feel a bit overwhelmed at this point, but very excited for this adventure, and I really hope to make a lot of new friends on this site and any of you expats in the area. I really appreciate any help from those of you that can take the time to guide me in the right direction.
Thank you all,
Roger N.

Hi Rogern, how are you.
I am from Cebu and reading on your post, I would like to help you on the following points:
1. as for your hotel, I recommend a new inn very much in the center of the City, please check on www.mainhotelandsuites.com. If you think this is what you want, I can help you make your reservation. Kindly email me at [email protected] for your details; 2. Since you will arrive Cebu rather late at night, I suggest you let the hotel transfer you from airport to their place. My reason is a lot of taxi drivers could take advantage of you, your being first time in the place. It is better that the hotel with a flat rate will safely meet you and bring you to their place; 3. As for exchange, usually all hotels exchange dollars to pesos. However I suggest do not exchange a big amount because usually the hotels rate of exchange is low. When you get to the shopping malls, ayala, SM, they have foreign exchange and you can then have your dollars changed for good rate; 4. Making friends is a good act from you, but be also very cautious. Usually the hotel personnel can give you a good guide to it. Depending of course on what you want to do in Cebu. Have you researched on it> We have very good beach resorts, tourist spots, though the city is congested with vehicles. 5. Any other queries please do not hesitate to email or post in this forum. Welcome to the Philippines, welcome to Cebu! aida

Roger, my name is Sherwood. I can answer many of your questions. My wife is a resident of Cebu for 60 years, minus 10 years she stayed in Manila. She comes from a big family and has many relatives living in Cebu. Our house is 1 mile or so from the airport. Her son does tours of Cebu. We live there and can fill you in on what you need to know and how to get around, where to shop for goods and services.
My personal email is [email protected]. I will be flying to Cebu in 10 days and hope to meet you.

Hi Roger, first of all congratulatios! I to will move there finaly on the 23 of Aug.I'll be landing in Manilla, but I wanted to go strait to Cebu. I'll be visiting Cebu shortly, but dicided that since Tagaytay was highly recomended by people here and is I'm told one hour from Manilla,Id go give it and Manilla a look first since flights to Cebu are only about $90.and the airport could transport me to other areas that people can suggest. I'd like to get together at some point with you in Cebu,so we might want to do some discoveries there and check out the unknown.my name is walter

A BIG thank you to all who responded here and via pm's.
If there is anyone else who would like to give ANY additional information, I will welcome it.
I am interested in perhaps living in the Lahug or Banilad section, if anyone can share any pertinent info on either of these areas. 32 days and counting.
Thanks again everybody,
Roger N.
