A Filipino lady in know here in US has been telling me that Iloilo is the place to retire. I then discovered an expat website on FB and the moderator there, very helpful, suggested Tagaytay. Comparisons anyone? I noticed that Ilo has a rather high crime rate, Tagaytay no.I'm divorced, 60 this year and want to retire in a quiet, laid back environment, gardening, growing veggies and walking the dogs type of thing. I'm not interested in getting into a relationship so I won't be looking. I want to buy a free-standing house with a largish lot if possible, but I'm worried about the legal issues facing a single foreigner, who has no intentions of hooking up with a local girl. Any advice would be so appreciated, thank you. My budget would be around $250g to set up.

robraif - don't plan on owning land to grow veggies since a Westerner cannot own land in RP. It's not something that a bribe can fix either. When I divorced my wife, it took about three years before I considered attempting another search for a loving & trusting relationship. There were a series of failed 'trial-relationships' until I met my match in the RP. Should you ever change your mind about women, you are in the right country to find something special for you.

Rob, We were looking for a property in Tagaytay area back in 2010, unfortunately it was too expensive for us to buy a property in that area. In one subdivision the property prices was in dollars, the average price was $160K-200K. But the nice part about that is the size of the homes was similar to surburban homes in the US. Tagaytay is about 1-2 hr drive from the airport. Times have change though, they have a starbucks now and other western amenities in the area. Good luck and Enjoy your stay

I just bought a 281sqm block in Splendido for far less that US$100K (far less) It is a secure gated community with a golf course, club house, etc. We just about bought a condo in Manila then I thought for the price of a condo in Manila I can own a three story house in Tagaytay witha view of the Greg Norman designed golf course and lake. I did a lot of research and found the best value was Splendido (say over Tagayaty Highlands). We've been to Tagaytay many times now and cant really fault it... If you want further information please contact me privitley...

Robralf, I live in Tagaytay and wouldn't move to any other place. But... Tagaytay has become somewhat urbanized of sort. Judging from the way you described the life you want to live, the surrounding towns would fit you very well. The weather will still be Tagaytay like and all the amenities will be within a short hop away. The best thing for you to do is come and stay for a time. Btw, Tagaytay has three Starbucks, not just one.

One Starbuck I go to in Tagaytay must have the BEST Starbucks view in the world!! The view over the lake is amazing.... When I move there I will take my Ipad and read the news with a Grande Americano every morning :) Can't wait :)

You worry too much. The people in the Philippines are warm and very friendly and yes there is no doubt that you will meet very beautiful Filipinas. There is no law or rule that you have to get married. Your relationship is up to you and any Philippine friends you make. Just explore and I am sure you will find the right place to settle. The reason people live in different places is because what is right for someone might not be right for some one else. It is up to you to decide what is home to you, not me or anyone else. I hope this is of some help. Sherwood
