Advice on Home Insurance

I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on the value of buying home insurance. Whilst my house was built to a standard that has taken , hurricanes and earthquakes into consideration, nothing is immune from these natural disasters or indeed other factors such as fire/flood etc etc. If the house were severely damaged in such a scenario it would be financially crippling. I have done a little research on line but as always I find the best way to secure information is through forums such as this. Has anyone insured their property, if so could you give an idea of cost and reputable companies?

Be brave.live a little. Don't have insurance. You are probably conditioned to it by tv!

The insurance companies here are not regulated as they are in the west many just do not pay out. Your best bet is to research the best company in philippines

Poochewer, ordinarily your advice would be sound, I have been conditioned by TV but not in the way you think; the pictures of devastation in Tacloban, Pinatubo and other such disasters is what makes me nervous. Then again maybe living in PI means this is another risk we just have to accept, which is a small price to pay. Thanks to all for the advice. Not too sure how I will approach this but of I do find something of value I will post the results.

Mate, I was in the heart of the storm. I watched as 2 inch steel rods were bent like human hairs in the wind. I was on top of my house trying to stop an entire sheet of corrugated iron from lifting off my roof, whilst wearing my motor cycle Helmut for safety. But it was what I saw after the typhoon was what amazed me. The way the Filipinos, simply got off their ass and got into rebuilding, as if nothing had happened, and they never stopped until they made their town a lovely place again. What I love is their attitude. If we achieved one tenth of that attitude, no-one of is foreigners would ever need insurance again. Life is so short.why worry about what might happen?
